A complete A–Z reference of every named character in the Fading Light Saga. Some of these characters may look familiar to you because I am a big fan of a certain show and pictured the actors in my head as I wrote the characters. I will let you guess who is who and what fandom it is that I love so dearly.

Aelric Montarras

A master strategist and logistician, famed for seeing the game others cannot: not just the “whole board,” but the boards of everyone around him. Fiercely loyal to the crown, though never naive—he sees threats where others overlook them, making him invaluable but sometimes unsettling to courtiers. Respected by soldiers because he is always willing to work beside them. He digs trenches, hauls supplies, sharpens blades, and eats the same rations without complaint. He refuses to ask of his men anything he would not do himself. Background: Raised in the southern marches, a borderland where vigilance meant survival. Distinguished himself early not only in combat but also in supply and planning, earning victories before swords were drawn. Role: Co-Owner of the Underbrew Inn and Head of the Inn Kitchens Age: 43 Appearance: Though shorter than her husband at 5 feet 8 inches, Alenya Underbrew possesses a presence that naturally draws attention whenever she enters a room. Role: Student; Kitchen Helper at the Underbrew Inn Age: 8 Appearance: Andrew Underbrew is a small but constantly busy boy with messy brunette hair, warm brown eyes, and the permanently flour-dusted appearance of someone who spends more time in a kitchen than most children his age. His clothes are rarely clean for long, usually smelling faintly of bread, smoke, stew, or fresh herbs after spending entire days helping in the kitchens beside his mother. Personality: Cheerful, hardworking, and eager to help, Andrew has spent years following his mother through the kitchens of the Underbrew Inn acting as an enthusiastic “gopher” for nearly every task imaginable. Unlike many children his age, Andrew genuinely enjoys responsibility and dreams of helping run the inn properly when he is older. Angela Ruane

Character

Role: Student Age: 7 Appearance: Angela Ruane is a small, energetic girl with shoulder-length strawberry-blonde curls, bright blue eyes, and sun-tanned skin earned from spending more time outdoors than indoors. Freckles scatter across her nose and cheeks, and her knees are almost perpetually scraped from climbing trees, exploring fields, or following animal tracks through the woods. Penelope dotes on her endlessly, fussing over her appearance, fixing her hair, and trying to treat her like the sweet little girl she sees in her mind. Angela, meanwhile, often responds by becoming even more of a tomboy. If Penelope wants her in a pretty dress, Angela somehow ends up covered in mud. If Penelope fixes her curls, Angela immediately goes climbing trees. Despite the constant tug-of-war, the two share a close and loving bond, and Angela looks up to her sister far more than she would ever admit. Reputation: Around Emerald Grove, Angela is known as the little redheaded whirlwind who is rarely where she’s supposed to be. More often than not, she can be found with a fishing pole, a pocket full of interesting rocks, or a new scrape she insists isn’t serious. Most villagers expect she’ll either become an expert craftswoman, a huntress, or the source of her parents’ gray hair. Possibly all three.

Antony Ruane

Character

Role: Miller; Owner of the Ruane Mill Age: 56 Appearance: Antony Ruane is a sturdy, broad-shouldered man with sun-weathered skin, hazel eyes, and reddish-brown hair that he wears tied back at the nape of his neck. Though silver has begun to appear at his temples, years of physical labor have kept him strong and capable. His hands are rough from decades spent maintaining machinery, hauling grain, and working alongside his employees. He rarely concerns himself with fashion, favoring practical work clothes suited to long days at the mill. Personality: Hardworking, dependable, and fiercely protective of his family, Antony is known throughout Emerald Grove for both his strong work ethic and his short temper. He is quick to speak his mind and has little patience for laziness, dishonesty, or foolish decisions. Despite his gruff exterior, those closest to him know that much of his frustration comes from a place of care. When it comes to his wife and daughters, however, Antony’s rough edges soften considerably. He loves his family deeply and would do anything to protect them. He also maintains a longstanding fondness for Braedan Meswick, one of the few young men who can speak freely around him without fear of provoking an argument. Background: Antony owns and operates the Ruane Mill, one of the most important businesses in Emerald Grove. The mill supplies flour to much of the village and supports numerous local families, making Antony a respected figure despite his occasionally intimidating demeanor. Years ago, the Ruane family suffered a devastating loss when Antony’s eldest son was lost in a shipwreck. Though life moved forward, the tragedy left a lasting mark on him and changed the man he once was. While he continues to provide for his family and serve his community, those who knew him before the accident often note that his temper grew shorter in the years that followed. Relationships: Antony shares a loving marriage with his wife and takes immense pride in both of his daughters. He is especially protective of Angela, whose adventurous nature frequently tests his nerves. He also cares deeply for Penelope and approves of her relationship with Caspian Underbrew, though he maintains the habit of pretending to be more intimidating than he actually is whenever young men are involved. Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Antony Ruane is known as a hardworking miller who can usually be counted on to help solve a problem, provided no one wastes his time in the process. Ari Underbrew

Character

Role: Student Age: 12 Height: 5’0” Appearance: Ari Underbrew is a lanky, energetic boy with unruly red wavy hair, bright green eyes, and the permanently amused expression of someone usually only moments away from causing trouble. Though beginning to grow taller quickly, he still carries much of the awkwardness of early adolescence, all long limbs, quick movements, and restless energy. Unlike several of his older brothers, Ari has not yet begun growing facial hair, something his siblings never allow him to forget for very long. More often than not, his clothes bear evidence of whatever he has most recently been climbing, chasing, building, or attempting to sneak past someone unnoticed. Personality: Intelligent far beyond what most people initially expect, Ari possesses the dangerous combination of a quick mind and not nearly enough challenge to keep it occupied. As a result, he is constantly joking, scheming, experimenting, or finding new ways to entertain himself, usually at someone else’s expense. Rarely malicious, his troublemaking almost always comes from boredom, curiosity, or an overwhelming desire to make the people around him laugh. Ari thrives on humor and attention, often using jokes and mischief to lighten tense situations or pull smiles from exhausted family members during difficult days at the inn. Beneath the chaos, however, he is deeply loving and fiercely devoted to his family, especially protective of younger siblings or anyone being treated unfairly.
