A complete A–Z reference of every named character in the Fading Light Saga. Some of these characters may look familiar to you because I am a big fan of a certain show and pictured the actors in my head as I wrote the characters. I will let you guess who is who and what fandom it is that I love so dearly.
Role: Lord Commander of the Royal Army (head of the crown’s military forces)
Age: 40
Appearance: Towering at 6 feet and built like a fortress, Aelric’s size alone commands attention. His broad shoulders and solid frame make him an imposing figure, whether in armor or plain clothes. His skin is a warm olive tone, his eyes a dark, commanding brown that miss little. His thick black hair is kept long and often pulled back partially. He is never clean-shaven, preferring short cropped facial hair his square jaw giving him an air of disciplined precision.
Background: Raised in the southern marches, a borderland where vigilance meant survival. Distinguished himself early not only in combat but also in supply and planning, earning victories before swords were drawn. His ability to anticipate shortages, cut off enemy lines, and keep his men fed and ready made him indispensable. Rose swiftly through the ranks, becoming the King’s most trusted military commander.
Reputation: Among soldiers: respected and even beloved, known as fair but unyielding. They trust him because he shares their burdens. Among nobles: admired for victories but regarded with unease—his “outsider’s blood” and blunt manner make him harder to predict, harder still to manipulate.
Alenya Underbrew

Role: Co-Owner of the Underbrew Inn and Head of the Inn Kitchens
Age: 43
Appearance: Though shorter than her husband at 5 feet 8 inches, Alenya Underbrew possesses a presence that naturally draws attention whenever she enters a room. Her beauty is renowned throughout Emerald Grove and beyond, spoken of almost as often as the inn itself. Years of labor near the heat of the kitchen have done little to diminish her appearance. Her long dirty blonde hair falls nearly to her waist when unbound, though it is almost always tied up while she works. Loose strands frequently escape around her face by the end of a busy evening. Her hazel eyes are warm and observant, carrying both intelligence and deep compassion, often making people feel understood before she has spoken a single word.
She moves through the inn with practiced certainty, balancing trays, directing kitchens, tending simmering pots, and comforting weary travelers all with the same effortless grace. The scents of herbs, fresh bread, broth, smoke, and wildflowers seem to follow her wherever she goes.
Personality: Alenya is the heart of the Underbrew Inn in ways even Garrick quietly admits. Warm, nurturing, and endlessly patient, she has become a mother not only to her own sprawling family but, in many ways, to half the village itself. People naturally gravitate toward her when troubled, and it is not uncommon for patrons to arrive seeking advice as much as food or lodging.
She possesses a calm wisdom that makes others feel safe speaking openly. Alenya rarely judges harshly, preferring instead to listen carefully before offering gentle but honest guidance. While kindhearted, she is far from soft. Running the kitchens of the Underbrew Inn while raising fifteen sons demanded discipline, endurance, and a voice capable of silencing chaos instantly when needed.
Among the women of Emerald Grove, she is considered one of the pillars of the women’s circle. Her knowledge of herbs, teas, healing broths, tonics, and natural remedies has earned her quiet recognition as something akin to a village wise woman. Though not formally counted among the Wise Ones, many seek her counsel before approaching the elders themselves.
Despite the endless demands placed upon her, Alenya carries remarkably little bitterness. She laughs easily, loves fiercely, and finds genuine joy in caring for others through food, comfort, and healing.
Background: Alenya spent most of her adult life beside Garrick Underbrew helping build the Underbrew Inn into the center of Emerald Grove’s social life. While Garrick commands the tavern floor and travelers’ attention, Alenya oversees the kitchens with unmatched skill, orchestrating meals for villagers, merchants, hunters, nobles, and wandering adventurers alike.
Over the years she became known not only for the quality of her cooking, but for her remedies. Travelers suffering from fevers, coughs, aches, exhaustion, or minor injuries often leave the inn carrying one of Alenya’s herbal brews or medicinal tonics alongside their meals.
Motherhood shaped much of her life. After bearing fifteen boys, thirteen of whom survived, she quietly accepted that she would never have the daughter she once dreamed of. Though she rarely speaks openly of that sorrow, those closest to her understand it never fully left her heart. Rather than allowing the loss to harden her, it deepened her compassion, making her fiercely protective of both her sons and the people she considers family beyond blood.
Reputation: To the people of Emerald Grove, Alenya Underbrew is regarded with a mixture of affection, admiration, and near reverence. Travelers remember her kindness long after leaving the village, while locals often speak of her as the woman who can heal nearly anything with enough broth, herbs, rest, and stern motherly instruction.
Children adore her, villagers trust her implicitly, and even the rowdiest patrons of the inn tend to lower their voices when she fixes them with a disappointed look.
Many quietly believe the Underbrew Inn would fall apart entirely without her steady hands guiding it behind the scenes. Even Garrick himself rarely argues the point.
Alvin Franks

Role: Younger Brother of Colsin Franks; Overseer, Gambler, and Informant
Age: 27
Appearance: Alvin Franks possesses the kind of rugged charm that causes people to trust him long before they should. Standing at 5 feet 11 inches, his build is lean and wiry, shaped more by labor, wandering roads, and restless living than formal combat training. Though broader through the shoulders than his older brother Colsin, Alvin lacks the same rigid control in both posture and presence. There is something looser about him, less refined, though no less dangerous beneath the surface.
His auburn hair, threaded with hints of copper in warm light, falls loosely to his shoulders and is rarely kept tidy for long. Wind, rain, smoke, and hard travel seem permanently woven into it. His hazel-green eyes are warmer than Colsin’s colder stare, though they rarely remain still for long. Restlessness lives behind them — calculation, impatience, insecurity, and the constant need to measure how others perceive him. A faint scattering of freckles marks his fair complexion, earned through years spent outdoors rather than hidden behind polished offices or noble halls.
A thin scar stretches across his knuckles, subtle but noticeable to observant eyes, the mark of quick hands and rougher work than he often admits to openly. Most memorable of all, however, is the half-smile he wears so easily. At first glance it appears charming, even playful, yet it rarely reaches his eyes fully. Beneath it lingers tension, as though some part of him is forever bracing for failure or betrayal.
Personality: Alvin was clever, though never quite as clever as he believed himself to be. Unlike Colsin’s cold and measured ambition, Alvin’s instincts were emotional, impulsive, and often reckless. He survived through charm, improvisation, and confidence rather than patience or discipline. He could talk a merchant into lowering prices, convince tavern keepers to overlook unpaid tabs, or pry secrets from strangers with disarming ease. People often liked him quickly, even when experience warned them not to.
Yet beneath the charm lived a far harsher side of him, one that surfaced most clearly whenever authority was placed in his hands. Alvin carried a desperate need to prove himself worthy of respect, particularly in comparison to his older brother. That insecurity often hardened into cruelty whenever he felt control slipping away. He demanded obedience harshly, mistook fear for competence, and could become startlingly ruthless when challenged publicly or made to feel weak.
Unlike Colsin, whose cruelty is deliberate and controlled, Alvin’s is reactive — born from pride, frustration, and the constant pressure of feeling lesser than the man whose shadow he spent his life beneath. He was capable of generosity one moment and cold severity the next, leaving even those close to him uncertain which version they might encounter.
Though not entirely without compassion, Alvin’s kindness was inconsistent, often overshadowed by selfishness, envy, and wounded pride. He genuinely cared for those who showed him loyalty, but his need for validation frequently outweighed his better instincts.
Background: Alvin spent much of his life living in the shadow of his older brother, Colsin Franks. While Colsin steadily built influence and authority through discipline and calculated ambition, Alvin drifted between schemes, wagers, temporary ventures, and dangerous opportunities, forever trying to prove himself equally capable. The comparison quietly poisoned much of his adult life, feeding both his charm and his recklessness in equal measure.
His natural ability to read people and gather information made him useful in many circles. Merchants, gamblers, dockworkers, smugglers, and tavern owners across the region often knew Alvin by reputation long before meeting him directly. Some remembered him as charismatic and entertaining, while others recalled unpaid debts, missing coin, broken promises, or the unsettling realization that his easy smile concealed sharper intentions beneath it.
Over time, Alvin became increasingly entangled in the harsher side of Colsin’s growing operations. Though he lacked his brother’s strategic brilliance, he adopted many of the same methods, believing cruelty and intimidation were necessary signs of strength. Those who worked under Alvin often learned quickly that his charm disappeared the moment authority or profit was threatened.
Though the true nature of Alvin’s relationship with Colsin remains largely private, many familiar with the Franks family quietly note the tension that exists between the brothers. Whether born from rivalry, resentment, admiration, or fear, few outside the family claim to understand it fully.
Reputation: To casual acquaintances, Alvin Franks is often remembered as charming, impulsive, and dangerously likable. He has a talent for making friends quickly, talking himself out of trouble, and convincing others to overlook his flaws longer than they should. Tavern crowds tend to enjoy him. Merchants rarely trust him fully. Gamblers either love him or despise him.
Those who worked beneath him, however, tend to remember a very different man.
Behind the humor and confidence lies someone deeply afraid of insignificance, a man forever struggling to prove he deserves the power and respect he so desperately craves. Many who encounter Alvin come away with the same uneasy impression: that beneath the easy grin and quick wit lives someone constantly at war with himself, and that others often suffer when he begins losing that battle.
Ambrose Underbrew

Role: Student; Identical Twin to Emmeric
Age: 10
Appearance: Ambrose is a sun-darkened, energetic boy with long blonde wavy hair usually tied back behind his shoulders to keep it out of his face while outdoors. Standing around 4 feet tall, he is lean and constantly moving, more comfortable climbing trees, crossing streams, or wandering forests than sitting still indoors. His skin is deeply tanned from spending nearly all his time outside hunting, fishing, and exploring with his twin brother.
Personality: Curious, adventurous, and endlessly energetic, Ambrose rarely stays out of trouble for long. He and Emmeric are known throughout the village for disappearing into the woods together in search of fishing spots, animal tracks, hidden campsites, or anything remotely mysterious. Though mischievous and often reckless, Ambrose has a genuinely kind heart and a fascination with magic, ancient stories, and magical creatures that constantly fuels his imagination.
He asks too many questions, believes adventure is always nearby, and has a habit of dragging others into trouble simply because the world feels too interesting to ignore.
Background: Raised alongside his identical twin Emmeric, Ambrose spends most of his free time outdoors rather than focused on lessons or responsibilities. The forests and rivers surrounding the village have become his second home, and many locals suspect the twins know the nearby wilderness better than some grown hunters.
Though often frustrating to teachers and adults alike, Ambrose’s enthusiasm, loyalty, and wonder for the world around him make him difficult to stay angry with for long.
Reputation: Most villagers know Ambrose as one half of the troublesome twin pair forever covered in dirt, carrying fishing poles, or chasing stories about strange creatures in the woods. Despite the chaos that tends to follow him, he is widely liked for his warmth, curiosity, and infectious excitement for nearly everything around him.
Andrew Underbrew
Role: Student; Kitchen Helper at the Underbrew Inn
Age: 8
Appearance: Andrew Underbrew is a small but constantly busy boy with messy brunette hair, warm brown eyes, and the permanently flour-dusted appearance of someone who spends more time in a kitchen than most children his age. Standing around 4 feet tall, he moves quickly through the inn carrying herbs, bowls, firewood, ingredients, and messages for whoever needs them next. Though still young, he already carries himself with the determined seriousness of someone convinced he has important work to do.
His clothes are rarely clean for long, usually smelling faintly of bread, smoke, stew, or fresh herbs after spending entire days helping in the kitchens beside his mother.
Personality: Cheerful, hardworking, and eager to help, Andrew has spent years following his mother through the kitchens of the Underbrew Inn acting as an enthusiastic “gopher” for nearly every task imaginable. Whether fetching ingredients, carrying dishes, gathering firewood, or running messages across the inn, he throws himself into the work with endless energy and pride.
Unlike many children his age, Andrew genuinely enjoys responsibility and dreams of helping run the inn properly when he is older. He pays close attention to how the kitchens operate, often asking questions about recipes, supplies, guests, or how to keep the inn running smoothly during busy evenings.
Though earnest and well-meaning, Andrew is still very much a child and occasionally creates more chaos than help in his attempts to prove himself useful. Even so, his enthusiasm and kindness make him difficult for anyone at the inn to stay frustrated with for long.
Background: Having grown up surrounded by the constant activity of the Underbrew Inn, Andrew naturally became part of its daily rhythm from an early age. By the time he was five years old, he had already begun helping his mother in small ways around the kitchens, proudly taking on increasingly larger responsibilities whenever allowed.
He admires both his parents deeply and already speaks openly about one day helping manage the inn himself, much to the amusement of the older staff and regular patrons.
Reputation: Among the staff and guests of the Underbrew Inn, Andrew is known as an energetic and dependable little helper who is almost always carrying something important somewhere. Travelers often remember him fondly for his politeness, excitement, and determination to be treated like someone far older than he actually is.
Role: Innkeeper Age: 20
Appearance: Standing at 6 feet 3 inches with a broad, athletic build shaped by years of practical work and restless energy, Andrien Underbrew carries himself with an easy confidence that naturally draws people toward him. His skin is deeply tanned from long days spent outdoors between construction projects, deliveries, market errands, and the constant movement of life around the Foregate. Thick dark curls frame his face in loose waves, usually falling around his ears and neck in a way that somehow always looks slightly untamed no matter how often he pushes it back while working. Warm brown eyes almost constantly carry traces of amusement, sarcasm, or quiet mischief, usually accompanied by the faint smirk of someone already thinking of the next joke before the current conversation has ended. Light stubble along his jaw softens what might otherwise be an intimidating appearance, especially paired with his relaxed posture and expressive face. Unlike Braedan’s more grounded simplicity, Andrien possesses an effortless charm he seems largely unaware of. Even dressed plainly and covered in sawdust or dust from the streets, he tends to stand out in crowded rooms without trying. He smells faintly of pine shavings, soap, ale, smoke, and summer air.
Personality: Andrien is sarcastic, charismatic, and endlessly social, the kind of person capable of turning strangers into friends before they realize it has happened. His humor comes naturally and rarely stops, especially during stressful moments where he uses teasing and dry remarks to keep spirits from collapsing. He complains dramatically about difficult work while still somehow ending up at the center of every successful project. Though fully capable of hard labor, Andrien has absolutely no issue convincing one of his brothers to handle the heavier lifting whenever possible, usually through bribery, charm, or shameless manipulation disguised as encouragement. The fact that they continue falling for it says as much about him as it does about them. Beneath the sarcasm and easy confidence lies an unusually kind heart. Andrien notices when people feel uncomfortable, left out, or overwhelmed long before most others do, and he has a quiet habit of stepping in without making anyone feel pitied. While he avoids appearing overly serious whenever possible, the people closest to him understand that when something truly matters, Andrien always shows up. Unlike Braedan, whose reliability comes through discipline and quiet endurance, Andrien’s strength lies in his ability to hold people together emotionally. He lightens rooms simply by entering them, turning hard days bearable through humor, warmth, and the sense that no problem is ever completely hopeless while he is nearby. Despite his confidence socially, part of Andrien still struggles with deeper insecurities about where he belongs. Raised in the Foregate and Emerald Grove among laborers, merchants, and innkeepers, he occasionally wonders whether someone like him truly belongs in the larger world slowly opening around him. Rather than confronting those feelings directly, he usually buries them beneath jokes and exaggerated confidence.
Background: The eldest of fifteen brothers, Andrien was raised inside the Underbrew Inn in Emerald Grove, growing up surrounded by crowded tables, travelers’ stories, kitchen chaos, late-night laughter, and more noise than most people could survive gracefully. While other children learned peace and quiet, Andrien learned how to navigate responsibility, conflict, and people. From a young age he helped wherever needed within the inn, carrying supplies, repairing furniture, entertaining younger siblings, calming drunken patrons, and learning firsthand how inns become more than buildings. Under Garrick and Alenya’s guidance, Andrien grew into someone naturally capable of making others feel welcome no matter who they were or where they came from. Life inside the inn shaped nearly everything about him. His humor, social ease, patience, and ability to hold groups together all trace back to years spent watching his parents turn strangers into friends around shared meals and warm hearthfires. Though best known socially for his charm and humor, Andrien also developed strong skills in carpentry and construction over the years, often helping repair and expand buildings throughout Emerald Grove and the Foregate. He possesses a natural instinct for creating spaces that feel warm, alive, and welcoming rather than merely functional.
Reputation: Among the people of Emerald Grove and the Foregate, Andrien is one of the most widely liked young men in the district. Merchants enjoy his company, laborers enjoy working beside him, and tavern crowds tend to grow louder whenever he enters the room. Children follow him around asking questions, travelers remember him long after leaving, and even exhausted workers tend to leave difficult days in better spirits after spending time around him. Though some initially mistake his sarcasm and relaxed attitude for irresponsibility, those who know him well understand there is genuine steadiness beneath the humor. Andrien may joke through nearly everything, but when people truly need help, he is rarely absent for long. To many within the Foregate, Andrien represents the very best parts of the Underbrew name: warmth, laughter, loyalty, and the stubborn belief that no matter how difficult life becomes, there should always be a place where people feel welcome.

Role: Student
Age: 7
Appearance: Angela Ruane is a small, energetic girl with shoulder-length strawberry-blonde curls, bright blue eyes, and sun-tanned skin earned from spending more time outdoors than indoors. Freckles scatter across her nose and cheeks, and her knees are almost perpetually scraped from climbing trees, exploring fields, or following animal tracks through the woods. She favors practical clothing that allows her to run, climb, fish, and get dirty without worry.
Personality: Adventurous, stubborn, and endlessly curious, Angela would much rather spend her day fishing in the river or exploring the forests around Emerald Grove than helping in a bakery. She approaches the world with boundless energy and little fear, often throwing herself into new activities with more enthusiasm than caution. Though she can be headstrong, Angela has a good heart and loves her family deeply. She is especially fond of animals, the outdoors, and anything that lets her work with her hands. Recently, she has taken a strong interest in leatherworking and eagerly studies the craft whenever adults are willing to teach her.
Background: The youngest child of the Ruane family, Angela grew up surrounded by the warmth of her parents, her older sister Penelope, and the thriving businesses that help support Emerald Grove. Though she had an older brother, he passed away when she was very young, leaving her with little more than scattered memories and stories shared by her family. As a result, most of what she knows about him comes through the people who loved him. She currently attends school in Emerald Grove, where she performs well enough when she remembers to sit still long enough to pay attention. Relationships: Angela adores her older sister, Penelope, though the feeling occasionally creates conflict. Penelope dotes on her endlessly, fussing over her appearance, fixing her hair, and trying to treat her like the sweet little girl she sees in her mind. Angela, meanwhile, often responds by becoming even more of a tomboy. If Penelope wants her in a pretty dress, Angela somehow ends up covered in mud. If Penelope fixes her curls, Angela immediately goes climbing trees. Despite the constant tug-of-war, the two share a close and loving bond, and Angela looks up to her sister far more than she would ever admit.
Reputation: Around Emerald Grove, Angela is known as the little redheaded whirlwind who is rarely where she’s supposed to be. More often than not, she can be found with a fishing pole, a pocket full of interesting rocks, or a new scrape she insists isn’t serious. Most villagers expect she’ll either become an expert craftswoman, a huntress, or the source of her parents’ gray hair. Possibly all three.

Role: Miller; Owner of the Ruane Mill
Age: 56
Appearance: Antony Ruane is a sturdy, broad-shouldered man with sun-weathered skin, hazel eyes, and reddish-brown hair that he wears tied back at the nape of his neck. Though silver has begun to appear at his temples, years of physical labor have kept him strong and capable. His hands are rough from decades spent maintaining machinery, hauling grain, and working alongside his employees. He rarely concerns himself with fashion, favoring practical work clothes suited to long days at the mill.
Personality: Hardworking, dependable, and fiercely protective of his family, Antony is known throughout Emerald Grove for both his strong work ethic and his short temper. He is quick to speak his mind and has little patience for laziness, dishonesty, or foolish decisions. Despite his gruff exterior, those closest to him know that much of his frustration comes from a place of care. When it comes to his wife and daughters, however, Antony’s rough edges soften considerably. He loves his family deeply and would do anything to protect them. He also maintains a longstanding fondness for Braedan Meswick, one of the few young men who can speak freely around him without fear of provoking an argument.
Background: Antony owns and operates the Ruane Mill, one of the most important businesses in Emerald Grove. The mill supplies flour to much of the village and supports numerous local families, making Antony a respected figure despite his occasionally intimidating demeanor. Years ago, the Ruane family suffered a devastating loss when Antony’s eldest son was lost in a shipwreck. Though life moved forward, the tragedy left a lasting mark on him and changed the man he once was. While he continues to provide for his family and serve his community, those who knew him before the accident often note that his temper grew shorter in the years that followed.
Relationships: Antony shares a loving marriage with his wife and takes immense pride in both of his daughters. He is especially protective of Angela, whose adventurous nature frequently tests his nerves. He also cares deeply for Penelope and approves of her relationship with Caspian Underbrew, though he maintains the habit of pretending to be more intimidating than he actually is whenever young men are involved.
Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Antony Ruane is known as a hardworking miller who can usually be counted on to help solve a problem, provided no one wastes his time in the process. Though his temper is well known, so is his integrity. Beneath the gruff exterior is a loyal husband, devoted father, and respected member of the community who values family above all else.
Ari Underbrew

Role: Student
Age: 12
Height: 5’0”
Appearance: Ari Underbrew is a lanky, energetic boy with unruly red wavy hair, bright green eyes, and the permanently amused expression of someone usually only moments away from causing trouble. Though beginning to grow taller quickly, he still carries much of the awkwardness of early adolescence, all long limbs, quick movements, and restless energy. Unlike several of his older brothers, Ari has not yet begun growing facial hair, something his siblings never allow him to forget for very long.
More often than not, his clothes bear evidence of whatever he has most recently been climbing, chasing, building, or attempting to sneak past someone unnoticed.
Personality: Intelligent far beyond what most people initially expect, Ari possesses the dangerous combination of a quick mind and not nearly enough challenge to keep it occupied. As a result, he is constantly joking, scheming, experimenting, or finding new ways to entertain himself, usually at someone else’s expense. Rarely malicious, his troublemaking almost always comes from boredom, curiosity, or an overwhelming desire to make the people around him laugh.
Ari thrives on humor and attention, often using jokes and mischief to lighten tense situations or pull smiles from exhausted family members during difficult days at the inn. Beneath the chaos, however, he is deeply loving and fiercely devoted to his family, especially protective of younger siblings or anyone being treated unfairly.
Despite his reputation for trouble, Ari possesses a surprisingly gentle side, particularly around animals. He has an almost effortless way with them and dreams of someday working closely with animals in whatever form his future eventually takes. Injured strays, nervous horses, and creatures most people struggle to calm often seem unusually comfortable around him.
Though adults frequently find him exhausting, very few can stay angry with Ari for long.
Background: Raised within the constant noise and activity of the Underbrew Inn, Ari grew up surrounded by siblings, travelers, animals, and endless opportunities for distraction. While technically still a student, he often struggles to stay engaged with lessons that fail to challenge him, preferring instead to spend his time outdoors, helping around the stables, pestering his brothers, or inventing entirely unnecessary chaos for his own amusement.
Among the Underbrew sons, Ari has already earned a reputation for being both one of the smartest and one of the most difficult to keep occupied.
Reputation: To most of Emerald Grove, Ari Underbrew is known as a lovable menace — the clever redheaded Underbrew boy usually responsible whenever something strange, loud, missing, or unexpectedly alive appears where it should not be. Though constantly in trouble for one thing or another, he is widely adored for his humor, loyalty, and infectious energy.

Role: Apprentice Glassblower, Jeweler, and Fledgling Magic Wielder
Age: 17
Appearance: Aric Caelwyn is strikingly handsome in the effortless way that often causes people to notice him before realizing why. His dark glossy hair falls in loose waves that brush along his jawline, usually carrying the faint scent of smoke, ash, and heated glass from long hours spent in the workshop. Silver-blue eyes, sharp and reflective as polished steel, give him an intensity softened only by the warmth that so easily settles into his expression when he smiles. Years spent working beside the furnaces have given him broader shoulders and steady hands uncommon for someone his age. Whether shaping molten glass or handling delicate jewelry work, he moves with calm confidence and practiced precision, every motion controlled without ever appearing rigid.
Personality: Warm, confident, and quietly mischievous, Aric possesses an easy charm that draws people toward him naturally. He enjoys teasing others lightly, especially when they become flustered around him, though never with genuine cruelty. Beneath the confidence, however, is a patience and sincerity that makes him feel approachable rather than arrogant. He speaks passionately about his craft and genuinely enjoys teaching others about the work he loves, often becoming unexpectedly animated when discussing glassmaking, gemstones, magical theory, or the chemistry behind fireworks. Though talented, Aric rarely boasts openly, preferring instead to let his work speak for itself. His confidence comes less from ego and more from comfort in who he is, something many around him find both calming and dangerously attractive.
Background: Born into the Caelwyn glassworking family, Aric was raised among furnaces, colored sands, glowing molten glass, and delicate craftsmanship. Under his mother’s guidance, he quickly developed a natural talent for shaping glass and has already begun learning the finer precision required for jewelry making. Alongside his craftwork, Aric has recently begun showing signs of magical ability, something he approaches with equal parts fascination and caution. Though still inexperienced, he has become especially interested in how magic interacts with heat, light, color, and chemical reactions, often blending experimentation with both his glasswork and his growing fascination with fireworks. Much of his free time is spent testing new techniques, mixtures, and magical applications whenever he can acquire the materials safely, or at least mostly safely. Though still considered an apprentice in nearly every sense, many quietly suspect Aric’s skill and potential will someday surpass even those teaching him.
Connection to Imoen: Imoen’s fascination with Aric begins through his craft long before she fully understands the effect he himself has on her. Watching him shape glowing glass feels almost like witnessing magic, made only more distracting by the confidence and warmth with which he explains his work. What begins as curiosity quickly becomes something far more complicated as she finds herself increasingly drawn not only to the beauty of his creations, but to the boy creating them.
Arthur Underbrew
One of the three Triplets born to the Underbrew family. Owain, Arthur and Keo. There were complications and they came early. Arthur did not survive.

Role: Baker; Co-Owner of the Ruane Bakery
Age: 58
Appearance: Aurora Ruane is a tall woman with striking blue eyes and long, wildly curly blonde hair that has become one of her most recognizable features throughout Emerald Grove. Though nearing sixty, she remains remarkably beautiful, carrying herself with the confidence and grace of someone comfortable in her own skin. Years spent working in the bakery have given her a healthy glow and strong hands, while her warm smile has a way of making customers feel like honored guests rather than patrons.
Personality: Warm, nurturing, and endlessly patient, Aurora is the heart of the Ruane household. Where Antony’s temper can flare quickly, Aurora possesses a calming presence that often restores balance before arguments have the chance to grow. She believes strongly in family, faith, and caring for others through simple acts of kindness. Though gentle by nature, she is no pushover. Aurora has spent decades managing both a successful bakery and a busy household, and she possesses a quiet strength that allows her to stand her ground when necessary.
Background: Aurora operates the Ruane Bakery, one of Emerald Grove’s most beloved businesses. Known for fresh bread, pastries, and seasonal treats, the bakery serves as both a gathering place and a cornerstone of village life. She works closely with her daughter Penelope, passing along the skills and traditions that have sustained the family for years. Following the loss of her eldest son, Aurora became an important source of strength for her family, helping them navigate grief while keeping their home filled with love and stability. Her faith and resilience helped guide the Ruanes through some of their most difficult years. Relationships: Aurora is deeply devoted to her husband, Antony, and understands him better than anyone. While others may see only his temper, Aurora remembers the man he was before tragedy touched their family and continues to be his steady anchor. She adores both of her daughters. Penelope is her trusted helper in the bakery, while Angela constantly keeps her on her toes with muddy boots, fishing poles, and endless adventures. Though her daughters could not be more different, Aurora loves them equally and takes great pride in the women they are becoming. She is also very fond of Caspian Underbrew and the Underbrew family as a whole. Knowing Penelope hopes to marry Caspian one day, Aurora often sends her to the inn carrying fresh bread, pastries, and treats, small gifts offered not out of obligation but affection. In her mind, the Underbrews are already becoming family.
Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Aurora Ruane is known for her kindness, her baking, and her ability to make people feel welcome. Whether offering a warm loaf of bread, a listening ear, or gentle advice, she has earned the affection of nearly everyone who knows her. Many villagers would tell you that if Antony is the backbone of the Ruane family, Aurora is undoubtedly its heart.

Role: Apprentice Butcher
Age: 16
Appearance: Bastien Underbrew is a tall, lean young man with bright green eyes, pale skin, and a head of unruly red hair that rarely stays where he puts it. Standing just under six feet tall, he is still growing into his frame, though years of lifting supplies, hauling crates, and assisting in both the inn and butcher shop have begun to build strength across his shoulders and arms. Unlike many young men his age, Bastien remains clean-shaven by choice, believing that a butcher should present a neat and professional appearance to customers.
Personality: Quietly hardworking and dependable, Bastien approaches life with patience and determination. While some of his siblings seek adventure or excitement, he prefers routine, craftsmanship, and the satisfaction of a job done well. He is practical by nature and takes pride in learning his trade properly rather than rushing toward success. Though not the loudest member of the Underbrew family, Bastien possesses the same loyalty and strong sense of community that runs through all of his siblings. He is respectful, reliable, and often trusted with responsibilities beyond his years because people know he will see them through.
Background: Raised within the bustling halls of the Underbrew Inn, Bastien grew up surrounded by travelers, merchants, laborers, and enough siblings to fill a small village. While many children dreamt of becoming knights or adventurers, Bastien found himself fascinated by the trades that kept people fed. His interest eventually led him to apprentice under Emerald Grove’s butcher, where he quickly developed a reputation for careful work and a willingness to learn. He hopes to one day own a butcher shop of his own, providing quality meats to both the village and the surrounding region.
Relationships: Bastien remains close to his family and regularly helps at the inn whenever additional hands are needed. Though he enjoys the company of his siblings, he is often happiest working quietly alongside experienced tradesmen, learning every aspect of his craft. He shares a particular respect for hardworking individuals, believing skill and dedication matter far more than status or wealth.
Reputation: Around Emerald Grove, Bastien is known as a polite and dependable young man with a promising future ahead of him. While he may not attract attention the way some of his siblings do, villagers frequently describe him as someone they can count on. Many expect that one day Bastien will own one of the finest butcher shops in the region, and judging by his determination, they may very well be right.
Role: Mill Worker, Delivery Hand, and Eldest Son of the Meswick Family
Age: 19
Appearance: Standing at 6 feet 5 inches, Braedan Meswick possesses the kind of size and natural strength earned through years of physical labor rather than vanity or training. His broad shoulders and muscular frame come from hauling grain sacks, splitting wood, working mill machinery, and helping wherever work is needed around Emerald Grove. Despite his intimidating height, there is an openness to his posture and expression that makes him approachable rather than imposing. His shaggy brunette hair falls loosely around his face and is usually wind-tossed from long days spent outdoors between the mill, deliveries, and village roads. His green eyes are striking but gentle, carrying a quiet sincerity that makes it difficult for him to hide what he feels. Unlike many men his age, Braedan remains clean-shaven, giving him a slightly younger appearance when he smiles, though exhaustion and responsibility often weigh heavily behind his eyes. There is a grounded simplicity to the way he dresses and carries himself. Nothing about him feels polished or noble. He smells faintly of flour dust, fresh grain, pine smoke, and the earth of Emerald Grove itself.
Personality: Braedan is deeply kindhearted, hardworking, and painfully sincere. Raised to value honesty, loyalty, and responsibility above all else, he possesses little of the arrogance or selfish ambition found in many young men his age. He works because work needs doing, helps because people need help, and rarely expects recognition for either. Though intelligent, Braedan does not initially see himself as exceptional. He views his future as simple and largely predetermined: marry Elise, continue helping support his family, and someday build a quiet life within Emerald Grove. This humility makes him easy for others to underestimate, especially those who mistake gentleness for weakness. Emotionally, Braedan feels things deeply. The people he loves become central to his world, and the thought of failing them weighs heavily on him. He carries a protective instinct that often overrides his own safety or comfort, particularly where his family and Elise are concerned. Unlike many natural leaders, Braedan does not seek authority or admiration. What draws people toward him is his reliability. Others instinctively trust him because his actions consistently reflect his character. Even in moments of fear or uncertainty, he continues moving forward when others might break. At heart, Braedan remains a village boy shaped by love, labor, and community rather than war or politics. That grounded humanity becomes one of his greatest strengths.
Background: Braedan was born and raised in Emerald Grove as the eldest child of Thomas and Eleonore Meswick. From a young age he carried responsibilities beyond his years, helping support the household however he could while also watching over his younger sister, Imoen. At the start of the story, he works for Antony Ruane at the village mill, where he has become skilled in nearly every aspect of the operation. He harvests, dries, grinds, and processes grain, assists with deliveries and sales, and handles much of the physically demanding labor required to keep the mill running smoothly. His reputation as a dependable worker is already well established throughout the village despite his young age. Braedan grew up alongside both Andrien and Elise, forming bonds that shaped much of his life. Andrien became his closest friend, while his lifelong friendship with Elise slowly deepened into love as they grew older. The two began courting in their early teens and later became formally promised, with plans to marry once Elise reaches twenty. Before the events of the story, Braedan’s life is largely defined by routine, family, labor, and the quiet certainty of village life. Though content in many ways, there is also a lingering sense that the world beyond Emerald Grove is far larger and stranger than he has ever allowed himself to imagine.
Reputation: Among the people of Emerald Grove, Braedan is widely regarded as dependable, respectful, and unusually hardworking for his age. Villagers trust him instinctively, often asking for help knowing he is unlikely to refuse if someone is truly in need. Older generations speak well of him because he works hard without complaint and treats others with genuine courtesy. Younger villagers admire both his strength and his calm steadiness, though many also quietly envy the bond he shares with Elise. At the mill, Antony Ruane considers Braedan one of the most reliable workers he has ever employed, trusting him with responsibilities usually reserved for older men. To those closest to him, however, Braedan’s greatest strength is not his size or work ethic, but the quiet goodness that defines nearly everything he does.

Role: Royal Architect of Alerion; Chief Builder of the Crown
Age: 47
Appearance: Brennar Robbins is a broad-shouldered, solidly built man who carries the quiet weight of decades spent shaping stone, timber, and steel into structures meant to outlive him. His weathered skin bears the pale marks of long years spent beneath harsh sun, cold mountain winds, and construction dust. Dark brown hair, now beginning to silver heavily at the temples, is kept neatly trimmed alongside a practical close-cropped beard threaded with gray. His deep hazel eyes are calm, observant, and difficult to fool, often studying a room silently before he ever speaks. A faint scar runs along his left cheekbone, the lingering result of a scaffold collapse during his younger years, though he rarely acknowledges it when asked. Brennar dresses plainly compared to the nobles surrounding him, favoring sturdy ink-stained tunics, rolled sleeves, and a worn leather apron carrying the scent of cedar oil, parchment, and stone dust. Only during formal appearances at court does he trade the apron for a dark blue overcoat lined in brushed wool. Even after years serving the crown, Brennar’s rough calloused hands still mark him clearly as what he has always been — a builder first, everything else second.
Personality: Brennar is deeply pragmatic, deliberate, and rarely wasteful with either words or effort. He has the unnerving habit of listening silently for long stretches before offering a single observation capable of changing the direction of an entire discussion. Though many mistake his quiet nature for distance, those who know him well understand it comes from patience rather than arrogance. Years spent balancing beauty with structural necessity have made him methodical in nearly every aspect of life. He values foundations over appearances, permanence over spectacle, and competence over charm. Nobles unfamiliar with him often underestimate him at first, assuming him to be little more than another tradesman until he begins speaking with the authority of someone who helped shape much of Alerion itself. Despite his reputation, Brennar has little interest in status or politics. He is most comfortable among craftsmen, masons, carpenters, and apprentices, many of whom affectionately refer to him as the “Stonefather,” a nickname he pretends to dislike while secretly tolerating with quiet pride. Beneath his reserved demeanor lies a dry, understated humor that surfaces unexpectedly, usually delivered with such perfect seriousness that listeners often fail to realize he was joking until several moments later.
Background: Born in the mountain city of Kaelstead as the son of a mason, Brennar was introduced to stonework, scaffolding, and construction from an early age. Apprenticed young beneath the Master Builder of the royal roads, he quickly distinguished himself through both precision and an unusual eye for structural beauty. His reputation grew steadily throughout his twenties, eventually earning him a place among Alerion’s guild architects. His restoration of the east bridge following the devastating Riverfall Flood first brought him to the direct attention of King Lar, who personally commended the project for both its engineering and elegance. Not long afterward, Brennar was invited to oversee major architectural expansion projects throughout Alerion’s growing territories. Since then, he has supervised everything from castle additions and civic planning to noble estates, bridges, roads, and defensive structures. His loyalty, discretion, and refusal to flatter unnecessarily have earned him unusual trust within the royal family. Many quietly suspect Brennar knows more secrets hidden within Alerion’s walls than nearly anyone alive.
Voice and Demeanor: Brennar’s voice is deep, roughened slightly by years spent speaking over hammers, furnaces, and open wind. He rarely raises it, yet people instinctively listen when he speaks. His manner is calm, grounded, and quietly authoritative without ever feeling theatrical. He is known throughout the castle for practical sayings delivered with perfectly dry sincerity. “Plans are promises, Your Highness. Every line on paper is a lie until the foundation holds.” “If you want it to last, build it like you’ll live long enough to regret it.”
Role: Tavern Cook; Co-Owner of the Mandrake Tavern
Age: 43
Appearance: Brigitte Mandrake is a tall woman with striking blue eyes and long blonde hair that falls in wild waves nearly to her waist. Her naturally curvy figure, defined waist, and confident bearing make her difficult to overlook, while years spent working in a busy tavern kitchen have given her both strength and stamina. Though undeniably beautiful, Brigitte’s greatest feature is her warm smile, one that immediately puts guests at ease and makes strangers feel welcome.
Personality: Warmhearted, hardworking, and endlessly practical, Brigitte is the sort of woman who expresses love through action rather than words. She believes that a good meal can solve half of life’s problems and that no one should leave her table hungry. While kind by nature, she is also capable of taking charge when needed, keeping both her kitchen and household running smoothly through a combination of organization, patience, and determination. Brigitte possesses a natural gift for making people feel at home. Whether serving travelers, comforting friends, or caring for family, she approaches every task with genuine compassion and an open heart.
Background: Alongside her husband, Brigitte helps operate the Mandrake Tavern, one of Emerald Grove’s most beloved establishments. While the Underbrew Inn remains the village’s largest and most celebrated inn, the Mandrake Tavern has long held its place as a close second, known for exceptional food, welcoming hospitality, and a loyal local following. Much of that reputation rests upon Brigitte’s cooking, which draws visitors from throughout the village and surrounding farms alike. She raised her daughter Elise within the warmth and bustle of tavern life, teaching her the value of hard work, kindness, and caring for others. Though Elise’s scholarly interests often carried her beyond the kitchen, Brigitte always encouraged her curiosity and supported her ambitions.
Relationships: Brigitte shares a loving marriage with her husband and takes immense pride in the family they have built together. She maintains a particularly close bond with Elise, supporting her daughter through every stage of life while trusting her to forge her own path. She is also very fond of Braedan Meswick and has long viewed him as part of the family. Having watched the relationship between Braedan and Elise grow over the years, Brigitte rarely speaks of them as two separate families and fully expects the connection between the Mandrakes and Meswicks to continue for generations.
Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Brigitte Mandrake is known for her cooking, her kindness, and her ability to make anyone feel welcome. Travelers remember her meals, villagers value her friendship, and those closest to her know that beneath her gentle nature lies a fiercely devoted wife and mother. While many visit the Mandrake Tavern for the food, they often return because of Brigitte herself. Her warmth, generosity, and genuine care for others have made her one of the most beloved women in Emerald Grove.

Role: Weaver, Storyteller, and Market Vendor
Age: 19
Appearance: Carys Dellan is a bright and cheerful young woman whose presence seems to draw smiles wherever she goes. Her long golden-blonde hair falls in loose curls around her shoulders, and her striking violet-blue eyes are constantly alive with curiosity and mischief. She favors colorful dresses and practical clothing suited for market life, often carrying traces of paint, thread, or dye from her latest project. Many people remember Carys not simply for her beauty, but for the warmth and energy she brings into every conversation.
Personality: Optimistic, creative, and endlessly social, Carys has a gift for making people feel welcome. She loves stories, festivals, music, laughter, and any excuse to bring people together. Though she often presents herself as playful and carefree, there is a sharp mind beneath her cheerful exterior that notices far more than most people realize. Deeply loyal to her friends and family, Carys believes that kindness and community can accomplish more than most people think. She has a natural talent for connecting people, remembering names, and making strangers feel like old friends.
Background: Born and raised in the Foregate, Carys earns her living through weaving, embroidery, and storytelling. Her colorful fabrics can often be found throughout local homes and businesses, while her stories regularly draw small crowds in the market square. Known for her creativity and outgoing nature, she has become a familiar and beloved figure among merchants, craftsmen, and travelers alike.
Reputation: Most people in the Foregate know Carys as someone who can brighten even the dullest day. Children gather to hear her stories, merchants enjoy her company, and travelers often leave remembering her long after they’ve forgotten the goods they purchased. Many view her as one of the community’s natural social connectors, someone whose enthusiasm and kindness help bring people together wherever she goes.
Role: Bookkeeper and Financial Clerk of the Underbrew Inn
Age: 19
Height: 6’2”
Appearance: Caspian Underbrew is tall and leanly built, carrying himself with a level of neatness and composure uncommon among most of his brothers. His pale complexion immediately reflects the amount of time he spends indoors buried in ledgers, records, and account books rather than working beneath the sun. Unlike many members of the Underbrew family, whose lives revolve around kitchens, stables, or heavy labor, Caspian’s hands are more familiar with parchment, ink, and coin than axes or flour. His hazel eyes are thoughtful and observant, often carrying the slightly tired look of someone who spends long evenings balancing numbers long after others have gone to sleep. Dark hair is usually kept tidy, if occasionally disheveled after particularly stressful nights at the inn. Though more scholarly in appearance than several of his brothers, there is still enough strength in his frame to reveal he is no stranger to outdoor work when needed. During hunting season, he trades ink-stained sleeves for heavier traveling clothes and quietly joins hunting parties for deer and bear, helping provide food and supplies for both the inn and the family through the harsher months.
Personality: Caspian is intelligent, responsible, and noticeably more reserved than many of his louder siblings. Organized almost obsessively, he likes structure, schedules, and things being done properly, qualities that occasionally make him seem uptight to those around him. Still, beneath the seriousness lies a deeply caring and dependable man who takes genuine pride in supporting both his family and the inn however he can. He is respectful almost to a fault, especially toward elders, guests, and those he cares for deeply. While not naturally outgoing, Caspian listens carefully, speaks thoughtfully, and rarely acts impulsively. He often becomes the quiet voice of reason during moments of family chaos, though he has long since accepted that attempting to fully control the Underbrew household is a losing battle. Despite his more scholarly nature, Caspian enjoys hunting and views it not as sport, but as responsibility. He values contributing meaningfully to the family and takes quiet satisfaction in knowing his work, whether through bookkeeping or provisioning, helps keep the inn running smoothly. Among the few things capable of completely unraveling his usual composure is Penelope Ruane. Caspian has been hopelessly and deeply in love with her for years, a fact painfully obvious to nearly everyone around them. Though often awkward about expressing those feelings openly, his devotion to her runs unwaveringly deep.
Background: As one of the older Underbrew sons, Caspian naturally gravitated toward helping manage the enormous logistical demands of the Underbrew Inn. While many of his brothers found purpose through physical labor, kitchens, brewing, or serving patrons directly, Caspian proved far more suited to records, supply inventories, finances, scheduling, and correspondence. Over time, he became largely responsible for maintaining the inn’s books and helping organize much of the business behind the scenes. Garrick trusts him heavily in these matters, knowing Caspian’s careful attention to detail often catches problems before they become disasters. Though he spends much of his life indoors working, Caspian still makes time each year to join seasonal hunts, believing every member of the family should contribute where they can.
Reputation: Among the people of Emerald Grove, Caspian Underbrew is widely regarded as dependable, polite, and unusually well-mannered for someone raised in such a large and chaotic household. Patrons often trust him instinctively, especially when matters involve money, agreements, or organization. Though some view him as overly serious, those closest to him understand his steadiness comes from genuine care for the people around him. Many quietly suspect the Underbrew Inn would fall into complete financial ruin within a month if Caspian ever stopped keeping track of everything for them.

Role: Co-Owner of Fendale Roasts; Vegetable Cook and Front-of-Stall Manager
Age: 45
Height: 5ft 10in
Appearance: Chloe Fendale stands 5ft 10in tall, her height immediately noticeable but never imposing. Her build is graceful rather than fragile, shaped by years of steady work rather than deliberate care. She moves with quiet economy, every gesture purposeful and efficient. Her deep auburn hair falls long and is usually braided or coiled at the nape of her neck while she works, threaded with copper highlights that catch the light when she turns her head. The color is unmistakably shared with her daughter, Liora. Her soft hazel eyes are warm and perceptive, flecked with gold when the light strikes them just right. Fine lines rest at the corners of her eyes and mouth, earned through years of laughter, hard work, and conversation. Her hands are long-fingered and strong, often carrying the faint scent of herbs, oil, and roasted vegetables.
Personality: Warm without being overly expressive, Chloe possesses a calm presence that naturally puts people at ease. She is practical, observant, and remarkably perceptive of the emotions and motivations of those around her. While gentle in demeanor, there is quiet steel beneath her kindness, a strength that rarely needs to announce itself. She remembers names, faces, favorite meals, and stories shared months or even years before. Many customers return as much for Chloe herself as they do for the food she serves. She has an instinct for balance, on a plate and in life. Whether resolving a disagreement, organizing a busy lunch rush, or comforting a worried friend, Chloe approaches problems with steady patience and thoughtful consideration. She is not easily rattled and rarely raises her voice, but when she does speak, people tend to listen.
Background: Alongside her husband, Jonathan, Chloe operates Fendale Roasts, one of the most popular food stalls in Emerald Grove. While Jonathan oversees the meats and open-fire cooking, Chloe manages everything else. She prepares the vegetables, sides, sauces, and breads that have become every bit as sought after as the stall’s roasted meats. Her roasted roots and greens are known throughout the village for their perfect balance of herbs, seasoning, and texture. Fendale Roasts has become more than a business. It serves as a gathering place where villagers exchange news, discuss marriages, celebrate successes, and seek companionship. The stall is known for serving affordable meals good enough for hardworking laborers while still attracting nobles who know where to find exceptional food. Chloe has quietly built a reputation for feeding children a little extra when she believes they need it and ensuring that no regular customer ever feels forgotten. She raised her daughter, Liora, with the same values she brings to her work each day: kindness, honesty, responsibility, and respect for others. Though proud of Liora’s intelligence and independence, Chloe has always cared far more about the quality of her daughter’s character than any title or achievement she might earn.
Relationships: Chloe shares a deeply loving partnership with her husband, Jonathan. The two work together seamlessly, their strengths complementing one another without conflict or competition. Their marriage is built upon mutual trust, respect, and years of shared effort. There are no power struggles between them, only a quiet understanding developed through decades of working side by side. She is fiercely proud of Liora and recognizes much of herself in her daughter, particularly her compassion, intelligence, and independent spirit. Together, Chloe and Jonathan raised Liora with expectations of kindness, honesty, and a strong work ethic. Chloe is not impressed by titles or status, but she is impressed by character. Long before Andrien Underbrew finds the courage to openly pursue Liora, Chloe notices the way he looks at her daughter, the excuses he invents to visit the stall, and the effort he puts into earning her respect. By the time Jonathan eventually pulls Andrien aside for a conversation, Chloe already knows exactly what it will be about. And she already approves.
Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Chloe Fendale is known as one of the kindest and most dependable people in the village. Customers trust her recommendations, neighbors seek her advice, and visitors often remember her long after they have forgotten what they ordered. She has earned a reputation not through grand accomplishments or public recognition, but through years of consistent kindness, exceptional food, and a genuine interest in the people around her. Many leave Fendale Roasts remembering the meal. Most remember Chloe.

Role: Mine Overseer and Expedition Leader Age: 30
Height: 6’1″
Appearance: Colsin Franks possesses the sort of presence that naturally draws attention without ever appearing to seek it. Lean and wiry rather than heavily built, he carries himself with the confidence of a man accustomed to being the smartest person in the room. His dark red hair is typically tied back in a neat ponytail that brushes his collar, lending him an appearance that is both refined and disciplined. His pale complexion reflects a life spent behind ledgers, maps, contracts, and plans rather than working beneath the open sky. Sharp hazel eyes constantly assess the people and situations around him, rarely revealing what he is truly thinking. A thin scar runs from the corner of his left eye toward his cheek, subtle enough to go unnoticed at first glance but striking whenever it catches the light. Handsome and well-spoken, Colsin often makes a favorable first impression. Yet there is something unsettling beneath the surface. His smiles come easily, but rarely reach his eyes.
Personality: Colsin is intelligent, calculating, and profoundly self-serving. Charming when it serves his interests and ruthless when it does not, he possesses an unsettling ability to make people trust him long enough to use them. He understands how others think and exploits that understanding without hesitation. Unlike men driven by passion or conviction, Colsin is motivated primarily by ambition. He craves influence, control, and recognition, believing himself more capable than many of those born into power. Where others see relationships, Colsin sees leverage. Where others see loyalty, he sees usefulness. Though rarely prone to open displays of anger, there is a cold cruelty beneath his polished exterior. He views compassion as weakness, morality as an obstacle, and people as resources to be positioned, manipulated, or discarded according to his needs. His greatest strength is his ability to remain calm and deliberate under pressure. His greatest weakness is his arrogance. Colsin believes he is smarter than almost everyone around him, and that confidence often blinds him to dangers he cannot predict or control. For all his charisma, there is something fundamentally hollow about him. Those who spend enough time around him eventually recognize an uncomfortable truth: Colsin does not value people. He values what they can do for him.
Background: Born without noble blood, wealth, or powerful connections, Colsin spent much of his life determined to rise above the circumstances of his birth. Convinced that the world rewards strength rather than virtue, he dedicated himself to acquiring influence by any means necessary. Over time he established himself as a capable organizer and businessman, earning recognition for his ability to accomplish difficult tasks and manage large-scale operations. His intelligence and ambition eventually placed him in positions of increasing authority, where he proved exceptionally skilled at turning opportunity into power. Unlike many leaders who seek loyalty through respect, Colsin prefers control through dependency. He carefully cultivates the appearance of competence and reliability while ensuring that those beneath him remain useful to his ambitions. He harbors little admiration for privilege and openly resents those born into positions he believes they have done nothing to earn. Much of his ambition stems from a desire to prove that he deserves power more than those who inherited it.
Reputation: Among merchants, investors, and influential figures, Colsin is often regarded as a capable and effective leader. He is known for producing results, solving problems, and accomplishing tasks others would rather avoid. Yet even among those who respect him, there are whispers. Many find him charismatic. Others find him unsettling. He possesses a reputation for getting what he wants, regardless of the cost to those around him. People tend to leave conversations with Colsin feeling as though they have agreed to something without fully understanding how. Those who know him best understand that Colsin Franks rarely enters a room without a purpose and rarely leaves without gaining something from it. He carries himself like a man who believes the future belongs to those willing to seize it and has little concern for who may suffer in the process. To his supporters, he is ambitious and capable. To his enemies, he is dangerous. Both are correct.

Role: First Wife of Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin
Age at Death: 34
Appearance: Coralynn was a strikingly beautiful woman with long dark hair that fell in loose waves and bright, soulful eyes that seemed to shine with warmth and curiosity. She carried herself with effortless grace, possessing a quiet elegance that never felt forced or pretentious. Though admired for her beauty, it was her smile that people remembered most, warm, genuine, and capable of making anyone feel welcome in her presence. Personality: Warm, compassionate, and endlessly curious, Coralynn possessed a gift for making people feel at ease. She approached life with optimism and wonder, always eager to learn about the people and places around her. Her laughter came easily, and her kindness left lasting impressions on nearly everyone she met. Beneath her gentle nature was a stubborn streak that emerged whenever someone she loved was threatened or mistreated. She defended her family and friends fiercely, never hesitating to stand her ground when it mattered most. Her combination of warmth, intelligence, and quiet strength made her beloved by everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Background: Coralynn grew up in Emerald Grove, where she became close friends with Thomas Meswick during their teenage years. It was through Thomas that she first met Nate, who at the time concealed the fact that he was Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin. The introduction was simple. Thomas and Coralynn were reading together when Nate arrived, expecting nothing more than another ordinary afternoon with his closest friend. Instead, he met the young woman who would forever change his life. For Nate, it was love at first sight. Coralynn knew him only as Nate, a kind, charismatic young man who happened to be Thomas’s best friend. She fell in love with the man long before she ever learned the title he carried. Their relationship grew naturally from friendship into something deeper, built on trust, laughter, and genuine affection. When the couple eventually became promised, Nate stopped returning to Emerald Grove. Thomas feared that if the village learned how closely his family was connected to the future king, it could place them in danger. Though Nate stayed away, his friendship with Thomas never weakened. The two continued to visit one another regularly throughout the years, remaining as close as brothers. Following their marriage, Coralynn was welcomed warmly into the royal family. King Lorian and Queen Serenya quickly came to love her as a daughter, and she became one of the most beloved figures at court. Over the next thirteen years, she and Nate built a happy life together, creating countless cherished memories before tragedy struck.
Relationships: Coralynn shared a deep and loving marriage with Nathaniel Perwin. Their relationship was built upon friendship, trust, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Those closest to them often remarked that they seemed happiest simply being in one another’s company. She maintained a lifelong friendship with Thomas Meswick and never forgot the role he played in bringing her and Nate together. Thomas remained one of the most important people in both of their lives, his friendship treasured by them equally. She was deeply loved by King Lorian and Queen Serenya, both of whom viewed her as family from the moment she entered their lives. Her warmth and generosity earned her friendships throughout the court, where she was respected not for her position but for her character.
Fate: After thirteen years of marriage, Coralynn went into premature labor at approximately twenty-five weeks. Despite every effort to save her, complications during the birth caused severe hemorrhaging that could not be stopped. She died in Nathaniel’s arms, and their infant son, Sinclair, passed shortly thereafter. Her death devastated the royal family and left a wound in Nate’s heart that would remain for many years.
Legacy: Remembered as Nathaniel’s first great love, Coralynn helped shape many of the qualities that define the man he became. Her warmth, compassion, humor, and appreciation for life’s simple joys left a lasting impact on him, influencing the way he leads, loves, and cares for others. Though her life ended far too soon, Coralynn’s memory continues to endure among those who knew her. She is remembered not only as a beloved member of the royal family, but as a woman whose kindness made the world around her brighter. Even years after her passing, those who speak of Coralynn Perwin rarely do so without a smile. Her story may have ended too soon, but the love she shared with Nate became part of the foundation upon which the rest of his life was built.

Role: Royal Tutor & Linguist of the Alerion Library
Age: 61
Appearance: Corren Darnel is a tall, spare man whose lean frame speaks more of long hours spent over books than any physical labor. His dark hair has silvered heavily at the temples and throughout his beard, lending him a distinguished appearance that suits his station. Gray-green eyes peer constantly over the rims of his spectacles, sharp with intelligence and often carrying the faintest hint of amusement. Ink stains seem permanently etched into his fingers no matter how often he washes them, and traces of chalk dust can frequently be found upon his sleeves. He favors practical clothing, rolled linen sleeves, dark vests patched at the elbows, and well-worn belts hung with chalk, quills, measuring tools, and a brass magnifier. Though not conventionally imposing, there is a quiet confidence about him that immediately marks him as a man accustomed to being listened to.
Personality: Measured, kind, and quietly brilliant, Master Darnel believes that every mind is capable of growth if given the proper guidance. He teaches through logic, patience, and humor rather than criticism, finding genuine satisfaction in helping others understand difficult concepts. Unlike many scholars, he has little interest in displaying his own intelligence. Instead, he delights in watching others discover answers for themselves. Beneath his calm demeanor lies a sharp wit and a dry sense of humor. He often responds to mistakes with clever observations rather than reprimands, turning failures into lessons. Students quickly learn that while Master Darnel rarely raises his voice, very little escapes his notice. His questions have a habit of exposing flawed reasoning long before he offers the correct answer. Corren views learning as a practical tool rather than an abstract pursuit. To him, mathematics belongs in bakeries as much as libraries, and language matters because it shapes understanding. His favorite lessons are those that connect seemingly unrelated subjects into a larger pattern.
Background: Born in the trade city of Marrowreach as the son of a cooper, Corren’s education began not in a classroom but through curiosity and determination. As a boy, he taught himself letters and arithmetic by copying trade receipts onto discarded scraps of parchment. His unusual aptitude eventually caught the attention of a traveling scholar, who secured him an apprenticeship with the Archivists’ Guild. Over the following decades, Corren studied mathematics, linguistics, history, philosophy, and the emerging field of mathematical alchemy, the use of geometry, ratios, and numerical patterns in enchantment and craftwork. His career carried him through roles as a translator, record-keeper, accountant, and researcher before he was ultimately invited to Alerion by King Lar’s father to help educate the next generation of royal children. Since then, he has become one of the kingdom’s most respected scholars, dividing his time between the royal library, the classroom adjoining it, and his own ongoing research into ancient languages and magical systems. Subjects of Instruction: Corren teaches a broad range of subjects including mathematics, geometry, ratios, linguistics, ancient runes, history, philosophy, composition, record keeping, and tradecraft. He is particularly known for making complex concepts accessible through practical examples and everyday applications. His lessons frequently explore the connections between mathematics, language, faith, and magic, subjects many scholars study separately but which Corren believes are fundamentally linked.
Relationships: Master Darnel serves as Imoen Meswick’s primary tutor, recognizing both her intelligence and her tendency to follow curiosity wherever it leads. Rather than suppressing her creativity, he works to provide the structure necessary for her ideas to flourish. He is respected throughout the royal household, not only for his knowledge but for his ability to teach without arrogance. Many former students continue to seek his counsel long after their formal education has ended. Corren also shares a deep professional respect for Eleonore Meswick, appreciating her intellectual curiosity and willingness to question accepted assumptions. Though their fields differ, both possess a fascination with understanding how the world truly works beneath its surface.
Notable Traits: Corren is capable of writing mirrored runes with both hands simultaneously, a skill that fascinates his students and frustrates anyone attempting to copy his notes. He often carries a sprig of sage or lavender tucked into a pocket, claiming it helps keep the dust from eating his memory. When deep in thought, he absentmindedly works a small abacus between his fingers much like others might use prayer beads. His most frequently repeated saying is: “Numbers are patient. They wait until you’re ready to understand them.”
Reputation: Throughout Alerion, Master Corren Darnel is regarded as one of the kingdom’s foremost scholars and educators. While his accomplishments in mathematics and linguistics are considerable, he is remembered less for what he knows and more for what he teaches others to discover. Many students arrive in his classroom intimidated by the complexity of his subjects. Most leave believing they are capable of understanding far more than they ever imagined.
Role: Senior Miner and Crew Foreman
Age: 27
Height: 5’11”
Appearance: Daren Hoyt is a broad-shouldered laborer whose strength comes from years of hard work rather than formal training. Though not exceptionally tall, he carries himself with the confidence of a man accustomed to physical labor and long days underground. His dirty blond hair is usually tied back loosely, often escaping around his face after hours spent working in the mines. Years beneath the earth have left their mark. His skin is weathered, his hands heavily calloused, and small scars can be found across his knuckles and forearms from countless accidents and close calls. His rugged features, strong jawline, and striking blue eyes make him undeniably handsome, though Daren seems largely unaware of the effect he has on others. At first glance, he can appear intimidating. His size, rough appearance, and serious demeanor often cause strangers to assume he is far harsher than he truly is. Those who spend time around him soon discover there is far more warmth beneath the surface than his appearance suggests.
Personality: Daren is loyal, dependable, and far more comfortable following orders than giving them. He prefers action over discussion and tends to judge people by what they do rather than what they say. While not lacking intelligence, he is not naturally strategic and often relies on stronger personalities to determine the direction he should take. For much of his life, Daren believed that strength meant toughness. He learned to project a rough, intimidating exterior and rarely allowed others to see vulnerability, compassion, or doubt. To many, he appeared stern and unapproachable, reinforcing a reputation that was never entirely deserved. Beneath that hardened exterior, however, is a fundamentally kind man. Daren is patient with those weaker than himself, protective of those he cares about, and surprisingly gentle when the situation allows it. He has little interest in power, status, or recognition. What he values most is loyalty, honesty, and having people he can trust. His greatest strength is his unwavering loyalty. His greatest weakness is that he sometimes places that loyalty in the wrong people.
Background: Raised among laborers and miners, Daren spent most of his life learning how to work harder rather than think further ahead. The mines became his world at a young age, shaping much of his understanding of responsibility, authority, and survival. Over the years he gained a reputation as a capable worker and dependable hand. While others advanced through cleverness or ambition, Daren earned respect through consistency. If a difficult job needed doing, he was usually the first to volunteer and the last to complain. Though life taught him to be tough, it never managed to harden his heart completely. Beneath the rough edges remains a man who genuinely wants to do what is right, even when he struggles to recognize the difference between strength and leadership.
Reputation: Among miners and laborers, Daren is generally regarded as trustworthy, hardworking, and reliable. Few would describe him as a scholar or strategist, but nearly everyone agrees he is someone you would want beside you when things become dangerous. Those who know him well understand that Daren’s heart is considerably kinder than his rough appearance suggests. He is the sort of man who will help carry another person’s burden without being asked and never think to mention it afterward. While some remember him as intimidating, those closest to him know the truth. Daren Hoyt is not a cruel man pretending to be kind. He is a kind man who spent too long pretending to be cruel
Role: Nobleman of Alerion; Cousin of Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin
Age: 43
Height: 6ft 4in
Appearance: Denil Royce is a tall, broad-shouldered man whose imposing stature often draws attention before his title does. Standing 6ft 4in tall, he possesses a powerful frame and a naturally commanding presence. His dark brown hair is worn slightly longer than current court fashion, and a neatly maintained beard frames strong, handsome features. Warm brown eyes and an easy smile soften his otherwise imposing appearance. Though wealthy by birth, Denil favors understated elegance over extravagance, preferring finely tailored clothing and quality craftsmanship rather than displays of wealth. He carries himself with the quiet confidence of a man who has never needed to prove his worth to anyone.
Personality: Thoughtful, courteous, and deeply devoted to those he loves, Denil is known for his calm temperament and steady nature. Unlike many nobles, he has little interest in status, influence, or political maneuvering. He values peace, family, and personal freedom above ambition and is happiest when surrounded by those he cares about rather than attending court functions. Though reserved in public settings, Denil possesses a warm sense of humor and an approachable demeanor that allows him to connect easily with people from all walks of life. He listens more than he speaks, preferring observation to attention. Friends and family often describe him as dependable, honest, and refreshingly free of pretense.
Background: Born into a cadet branch of House Perwin, Denil Royce is the cousin of Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin and a respected member of Alerion’s extended royal family. Raised with every privilege afforded to his station, he received an excellent education and was expected by many to pursue a prominent role at court. Instead, Denil chose a quieter path. While he fulfills his obligations to the crown when necessary, he has never sought influence or political power. Together with his wife, Melinda, he resides on a remote estate far from the capital, preferring privacy and simplicity over the constant demands of noble life. Though he occasionally attends royal gatherings and family events, he is rarely involved in the day-to-day affairs of the kingdom. His decision to live apart from court has earned him a reputation as one of the more grounded members of the royal family, a man content with the life he has rather than constantly seeking more.
Relationships: Denil shares a loving and devoted marriage with his wife, Melinda Royce. The two are known for keeping largely to themselves, valuing peace, family, and the comforts of home above social standing or political influence. As Nathaniel Perwin’s cousin, Denil maintains a cordial and affectionate relationship with the royal family. Though he and Nate followed very different paths in life, the two share mutual respect and genuine fondness for one another. Denil’s presence at family gatherings is often welcomed as a reminder that loyalty and character matter more than titles.
Reputation: Throughout Alerion, Denil Royce is regarded as an honorable nobleman whose humility stands in contrast to many of his peers. He is known for treating servants, merchants, and fellow nobles with the same courtesy and respect, earning admiration from those who meet him. While some view him as a man who could have accomplished far more had he pursued power, Denil himself has never seen things that way. To him, a successful life is measured not by influence or wealth, but by the people one loves and the peace one leaves behind. Many nobles seek importance. Denil Royce has always preferred contentment.
Eamon Tameric

Age: 19
Appearance:
Eamon Tameric is shorter and leaner than his older brother, Rowan, with dark blond hair, bright blue eyes, and a perpetual look of amusement that rarely leaves his face. Ink stains are a common sight on his fingers and sleeves, evidence of the countless hours he spends working through ledgers and accounts.
Though not physically imposing, he carries himself with an easy confidence and quick smile that make him immediately approachable. More often than not, Eamon looks like he’s either solved a puzzle no one else noticed or is about to tell a joke he probably shouldn’t.
Personality:
Clever, witty, and endlessly curious, Eamon prefers conversation to confrontation. He enjoys puzzles, numbers, strategy, and uncovering patterns others overlook. While often playful and mischievous, he possesses a sharp mind and a natural talent for reading people.
His humor makes him easy to like, but those who know him well understand that there is far more going on behind the smile than he lets people see. Eamon pays attention, remembers details, and rarely misses what is happening around him. He enjoys making others laugh but is often the first to notice when something is wrong.
Background:
Unlike his older brother, Rowan, who earned a reputation through confidence and action, Eamon found his place among books, records, and finances. His natural aptitude for mathematics and organization eventually earned him a position assisting the royal treasurer, where he helps maintain accounts, review ledgers, and manage financial records.
Though still young, he has already developed a reputation for being dependable, organized, and surprisingly capable.
Reputation:
Among friends and coworkers alike, Eamon is known for his quick wit, easygoing nature, and sharp intelligence. Most people enjoy his company, while others have learned that his playful smile often appears right before he points out something everyone else missed.
He’s the sort of person who rarely seeks attention, yet somehow always seems to know exactly what’s going on. Friendly, perceptive, and always ready with a joke, Eamon has a way of making himself welcome wherever he goes.
Eldep Underbrew

Role: Tavern Cook Apprentice and Hunter for the Underbrew Inn
Age: 19
Appearance: Standing at 6 feet 2 inches, Eldep carries the broad-shouldered build common among the Underbrew sons, though his movements are calmer and more deliberate than many of his brothers. His long, dark wavy hair is often tied loosely behind his head when working near the kitchens or while out in the woods. Years spent fishing the streams around Emerald Grove, hunting through the forests, and laboring outdoors alongside his family have left his skin deeply tanned by sun and weather. His green eyes are steady and warm, carrying an easy kindness that puts people at ease almost immediately. He smells faintly of cedar smoke, herbs, fresh-cut wood, and whatever meal is simmering in the tavern kitchens that day.
Personality: The fraternal twin of Caspian Underbrew, Eldep could not be more different in temperament. Where Caspian carries intensity and sharp edges, Eldep is patient, grounded, and openly warmhearted. He is slow to anger, quick to laugh, and rarely speaks harshly of anyone. There is a steadiness to him that makes others naturally trust him, the kind of dependable goodness that feels almost untouched by bitterness or pride.
Eldep loves simple things deeply: the sound of rain on the inn roof, the quiet of early mornings near the river, the satisfaction of splitting wood cleanly with one swing, and the joy of feeding people well after a long day. Though physically imposing, there is nothing threatening in him. Children follow him easily, travelers remember his kindness, and the people of Emerald Grove often remark that there “isn’t a shadow in the boy.”
Hardworking to his core, Eldep dislikes idleness and rarely sits still for long. If he is not helping repair furniture, hauling supplies, tending gardens, or hunting for fresh game, he is usually experimenting beside the tavern hearth trying to perfect a stew, roast, or sauce.
Background: Born into the sprawling Underbrew family, Eldep was raised in the constant noise and warmth of the inn, surrounded by siblings, travelers, laughter, and hard work. From an early age he gravitated toward the outdoors, often vanishing into the woods with a fishing spear, traps, or bow before returning home carrying enough to feed half the tavern.
Over time, his love for hunting naturally merged with cooking. Rather than simply bringing meat back to the kitchens, Eldep became fascinated with preparing it himself, learning how herbs, vegetables, smoke, and fire could transform even the simplest meal into something memorable. Under the guidance of the inn kitchens, he began training as a cook, developing a reputation for hearty meals made almost entirely from ingredients he gathered, hunted, or grew himself.
He is especially gifted at preparing game meats, smoked fish, root vegetable stews, and fire-roasted meals that remind travelers of home no matter where they come from.
Reputation: Among the people of Emerald Grove, Eldep is widely regarded as one of the kindest of the Underbrew sons. Travelers know him as the towering young man with gentle manners and exceptional food, while villagers trust him as someone who will always show up when help is needed.
Hunters respect his patience and skill in the forests surrounding the village, while the tavern regulars quietly believe he may someday become one of the finest cooks the Underbrew Inn has ever had.
Even among his large and often chaotic family, Eldep is considered a calming presence, the brother most capable of easing tensions with a joke, a meal, or simply his quiet company.

Role: Former Scholar, Historian, and Magic Researcher
Age: 40
Height: 5’10”
Appearance: Eleonore Meswick possesses a quiet elegance that remains difficult to ignore despite the hardships that have shaped her life. Tall for a woman, with a fit and capable build earned through years of labor rather than training, she carries herself with natural confidence and poise. Her reddish-brown curls frame a striking face marked by intelligence, warmth, and resilience, while her icy blue eyes often seem to notice details others miss entirely. Though once more familiar with libraries and archives than farms and cleaning supplies, years of hard work have left their mark. There is strength in her hands, endurance in her posture, and a weariness behind her eyes that only those closest to her fully understand. Even so, she retains the unmistakable presence of a scholar, someone whose mind is constantly observing, questioning, and learning.
Personality: Brilliant, compassionate, and endlessly curious, Eleonore possesses one of the sharpest minds in Alerion. Knowledge has always been more than an interest to her; it is a passion woven into every aspect of who she is. She approaches the world with wonder, constantly seeking to understand how things work, why they exist, and what hidden truths lie beneath accepted knowledge. Her love of learning naturally extended into motherhood. Rather than telling simple fairy tales, Eleonore filled Braedan and Imoen’s childhood with stories of ancient kingdoms, magical creatures, forgotten histories, legendary heroes, and the mysteries of spellcraft. She encouraged curiosity at every opportunity, teaching her children to question, explore, and think for themselves. Despite her intelligence, Eleonore is remarkably humble. She rarely flaunts her knowledge and has little interest in recognition or status. Beneath her gentle nature lies a quiet determination capable of carrying tremendous burdens without complaint. While many mistake kindness for weakness, those who know her well understand there is remarkable strength beneath her compassion. She is also an exceptionally gifted magic wielder, possessing both natural talent and an academic understanding of magical theory that few can match.
Background: Before marriage and motherhood redirected the course of her life, Eleonore was considered one of the most promising scholars of her generation. Her research focused on the relationship between magic and the physical world, as well as the impact magical creatures and monsters have had upon human civilization throughout history. Even within academic circles dominated largely by men, Eleonore quickly distinguished herself through both intellect and innovation. Her work challenged accepted theories, produced breakthrough discoveries, and earned growing recognition among fellow scholars. Many believed she was destined to become one of the foremost magical historians and researchers in the kingdom. At twenty, she married Thomas Meswick and willingly stepped away from her studies to build a family. Braedan was born the following year, followed by Imoen nearly three years later. Though she never regretted choosing her family, she always quietly intended to return to her research once her children were grown and no longer needed her daily care. Those plans changed when Thomas died. Faced with supporting her family through grief and hardship, Eleonore set aside her academic ambitions once again. Instead, she devoted herself to helping keep the household afloat, cleaning for other families, maintaining their farm, caring for animals, and working alongside Braedan to ensure they survived. Few who see her scrubbing floors or tending livestock realize they are looking at a woman whose intellect once reshaped scholarly understanding of magic itself.
Reputation: To most of Emerald Grove, Eleonore is known as a hardworking widow, a devoted mother, and one of the kindest women in the village. Neighbors respect her perseverance, while children gravitate naturally toward her stories and warmth. Among scholars, however, those who remember her work often speak of her with a different kind of admiration. Many quietly wonder what discoveries she might have achieved had life not demanded so many sacrifices from her. Those closest to her know the truth: Eleonore Meswick never stopped being a scholar. The books may have been replaced by chores, and the research by survival, but the brilliant mind behind them remains every bit as extraordinary as it always was.
Role: Scholar, Tavernkeeper’s Daughter, and Braedan’s Promised
Age: 18
Birthday: August 30
Height: 5’10”
Appearance: Elise is a striking young woman whose beauty is impossible to ignore, though she rarely seems aware of the effect she has on others. Tall and graceful, she carries herself with quiet confidence rather than vanity. Long waves of dark chestnut hair fall to her waist, framing fair skin and deep blue eyes that seem to brighten whenever she speaks about something she loves. There is a vitality about Elise that people notice almost immediately. She smiles often, laughs easily, and possesses an energy that naturally draws others toward her. Her beauty is undeniable, but it is her warmth and enthusiasm for life that leave the strongest impression. At the beginning of the story, she is carrying Braedan’s child, a future she embraces with equal measures of excitement, hope, and determination.
Personality: Bright, compassionate, and endlessly optimistic, Elise approaches life with the belief that nearly every problem can be improved through effort, understanding, and perseverance. She possesses a naturally curious mind and an eagerness to learn that often rivals even dedicated scholars. While kind-hearted, she is far from naive. Elise understands hardship, responsibility, and sacrifice, yet refuses to let difficult circumstances rob her of joy. She laughs often, loves deeply, and embraces life with an enthusiasm that inspires those around her. Her greatest strength is her ability to see possibility where others see obstacles. Even during difficult times, she remains focused on what can still be built rather than what has been lost. Though gentle by nature, she is far stronger than many people initially realize. When those she loves are threatened or hurting, she shows a quiet resilience and determination that cannot easily be shaken.
Background: Elise was raised in a family known throughout Emerald Grove for brewing some of the finest ales, ciders, and spirits in the region. Her parents own and operate a respected tavern, where she spent much of her childhood helping with customers, deliveries, and the countless daily tasks that keep a successful establishment running. Growing up in the tavern exposed her to people from every walk of life. Travelers, merchants, craftsmen, farmers, and nobles all passed through its doors, giving her a broader understanding of the world than many others her age. It also helped shape her welcoming nature, teaching her that kindness and hospitality often accomplish more than force ever could. Though deeply involved in her family’s business, Elise developed scholarly interests of her own. Fascinated by agriculture, irrigation, and food production, she spends much of her free time studying ways to improve harvests and strengthen the farms that support both the village and her family’s livelihood. She believes knowledge is most valuable when it serves others and is always eager to learn something that might improve life for the people around her.
Relationships: For years Elise has been promised to Braedan Meswick. Having grown up together, their relationship developed naturally from childhood friendship into a deep and enduring love. By the beginning of the story they have spent years building a future together, one founded on trust, affection, and unwavering devotion. Because she is younger than Braedan, tradition requires them to wait until she reaches twenty before marrying. Though eager for that day to arrive, neither views the delay as a burden. To them, their future together has never been a question of if, only when. She is deeply loved by the Meswick family and has long been considered one of their own. Her bond with Eleonore is built upon mutual respect and shared intelligence, while Imoen often feels more like a younger sister than a future sister-in-law.
Reputation: Those who know Elise describe her as intelligent, hardworking, and remarkably kind. She is respected for her curiosity, admired for her optimism, and valued for her willingness to help others. While some people are remembered for what they accomplish, Elise is remembered for how she makes others feel: hopeful, welcome, and capable of more than they believed possible. In a world increasingly threatened by uncertainty, Elise represents something rare and precious. The future. Not as a distant dream, but as something worth building every day.
Emmeric Underbrew

Role: Student; Identical Twin to Ambrose
Age: 10
Appearance: Nearly identical to his twin brother Ambrose, Emmeric shares the same sun-darkened complexion, lean frame, and long blonde wavy hair usually tied back behind his shoulders. Like his brother, he spends most of his time outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, and exploring the forests surrounding the village. Though dressed just as ruggedly and often just as muddy, Emmeric tends to carry himself with a calmer and more thoughtful presence than Ambrose.
Personality: Intelligent, curious, and slightly more serious than his twin, Emmeric is known as the more responsible of the pair, though that rarely stops him from getting dragged into trouble alongside Ambrose. A strong student with a genuine love of learning, he is especially fascinated by magic, history, and stories about magical creatures and distant places.
While quieter and less impulsive than his brother, Emmeric still shares the same adventurous spirit. He often pauses to think before acting, but usually ends up following Ambrose into trouble anyway simply because the two do nearly everything together. Though mischievous in his own way, Emmeric tends to be the one trying to explain their decisions afterward once adults become involved.
Background: Raised alongside Ambrose, Emmeric spends most of his free time wandering forests, rivers, and campsites surrounding the village. The twins are rarely seen apart and are well known for disappearing outdoors for hours at a time searching for fishing spots, tracking animals, or chasing rumors about strange creatures and hidden places.
Unlike Ambrose, Emmeric genuinely enjoys many parts of his lessons and often becomes absorbed in books involving magic, ancient kingdoms, and exploration. Teachers generally regard him as bright and capable, even if his loyalty to his brother frequently leads him into distraction and chaos.
Reputation: Among the villagers, Emmeric is often viewed as the calmer and more dependable twin, though many quietly suspect he enables just as much trouble as he prevents. Despite the mischief that seems to follow the brothers everywhere, Emmeric is widely liked for his intelligence, politeness, and quiet sense of humor.

Role: King of Dravenfell
Age: 49
Appearance: King Evander Alistair is a striking man with dark hair worn to his shoulders and sharp green eyes that seem to weigh every person and every word. Tall and lean, he carries himself with the confidence of a man accustomed to command. He is most often depicted wearing dark royal garments accented with gold embroidery and a crown set with deep crimson gemstones. His features are handsome but severe, giving him an air of authority that few dare challenge.
Personality: Intelligent, ambitious, and fiercely proud, Evander possesses a commanding presence that leaves a lasting impression on those who meet him. He is known for his sharp mind, political skill, and unwavering belief in his own judgment. Though undeniably capable, he is often criticized for placing his own interests above those of others. Evander struggles to tolerate opposition and rarely admits fault, even when confronted with evidence that he is wrong. His envy of Alerion’s prosperity and influence has become the subject of quiet speculation among diplomats and merchants alike. While he speaks publicly of cooperation and stability, many believe he views neighboring kingdoms primarily as rivals to be surpassed.
Background: Evander Alistair inherited the throne of Dravenfell during a difficult period in the kingdom’s history. Years of economic hardship, regional instability, and declining influence left many questioning whether Dravenfell could reclaim its former standing. Determined to restore his kingdom’s prestige, Evander devoted himself to strengthening the crown’s authority and rebuilding Dravenfell’s reputation among neighboring nations. His reign has been marked by ambitious projects, strict governance, and an unrelenting pursuit of power and influence. While some praise his dedication and determination, others question the cost of his methods.
Relationships: Evander maintains formal diplomatic ties with neighboring rulers, though his relationships are often shaped as much by competition as cooperation. His kingdom’s longstanding comparisons to Alerion have fueled both political tension and personal resentment over the years. Few people know the king well beyond his public image, and those who do rarely speak openly of him.
Reputation: Throughout the region, Evander is regarded as a capable but controversial ruler. Supporters view him as a strong king determined to secure Dravenfell’s future. Critics describe him as self-serving, prideful, and increasingly consumed by his desire to elevate his kingdom above all others. Regardless of opinion, few deny his intelligence or influence.
Legacy: Whether history ultimately remembers Evander Alistair as a visionary ruler or a cautionary tale remains uncertain. What is clear is that his decisions continue to shape the future of Dravenfell and its place within the wider world. Few kings inspire stronger opinions among their contemporaries than Evander Alistair.

Role: Crown Princess of Alerion; Second Wife of Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin
Age: 29
Height: 5ft 7in
Appearance: Evelaine is a striking beauty with vibrant copper-red hair that falls in soft waves down her back, fair skin dusted with freckles, and bright emerald-green eyes that seem to sparkle whenever she smiles. Her features are delicate yet memorable, possessing the timeless beauty often celebrated in songs and stories. Though slender through the waist, she has a naturally curvaceous figure and carries herself with effortless confidence and grace. Even among nobles, Evelaine draws attention. Her beauty is undeniable, but it is her warmth that people remember most. She favors elegant gowns suited to her station, often choosing rich greens, creams, and golds that complement her coloring. While capable of dressing with all the grandeur expected of royalty, she prefers clothing that allows her comfort and freedom rather than excessive ornamentation.
Personality: Warm, vibrant, and deeply compassionate, Evelaine possesses a gift for making others feel welcome. She is intelligent without being arrogant, confident without being prideful, and capable of navigating both royal courts and village gatherings with equal ease. Her laughter comes easily, and her presence naturally brightens any room she enters. Though kindhearted by nature, Evelaine is far from naive. She possesses a sharp wit and quick mind, often surprising those who mistake her warmth for softness. She understands people well and has a talent for easing tension before it becomes conflict. Children adore her, servants respect her, and nobles find themselves disarmed by her sincerity. She has little patience for cruelty, pretension, or unnecessary drama, preferring honesty and directness whenever possible.
Background: Born a princess of a distant kingdom beyond Alerion’s borders, Evelaine was raised amidst courts, diplomacy, and the responsibilities of noble life. From an early age she received an education befitting royalty, studying history, governance, languages, etiquette, and diplomacy alongside the traditional expectations placed upon noble daughters. Unlike many royals, however, Evelaine developed a genuine fondness for ordinary people and often sought opportunities to escape formal gatherings in favor of speaking with merchants, servants, craftsmen, and travelers. This habit earned occasional criticism from more traditional courtiers but endeared her to nearly everyone else. Years after the death of Coralynn Perwin, Evelaine was introduced to Nathaniel through diplomatic channels intended to strengthen relations between their kingdoms. What began as a practical arrangement quickly grew into genuine affection. Rather than attempting to replace what Nate had lost, Evelaine offered something entirely new: companionship, laughter, and the possibility of happiness after grief. Their relationship flourished because it was built upon honesty. Evelaine understood that Coralynn’s memory would always remain part of Nate’s life and never viewed it as competition. Instead, she accepted it as part of the man she loved.
Relationships: Evelaine shares a deeply loving marriage with Nathaniel Perwin. Though younger than her husband by fourteen years, the two complement one another remarkably well. Nate’s wisdom and steadiness balance Evelaine’s energy and optimism, while her warmth and humor help draw him out of the shadows left by past loss. Together they are parents to Princess Jazlin, whom Evelaine adores. She is an affectionate and attentive mother, equally comfortable reading stories, attending royal functions, or spending time outdoors with her daughter. She enjoys close relationships with King Lorian and Queen Serenya, both of whom welcomed her warmly into the royal family. Over time, she became beloved not only by the crown but by much of Alerion itself.
Reputation: Throughout the kingdom, Evelaine is regarded as one of the most beloved members of the royal family. While her beauty is often praised, it is her kindness, humility, and genuine affection for others that have earned lasting admiration. Many expected her to become a princess. Few expected her to become family. Yet that is exactly what she became.

Role: Keeper of Vows; Second of the Three Wise Ones
Age: 78
Height: 5ft 8in
Appearance: Sister Evren Kael possesses the kind of presence that commands attention without ever asking for it. Though age has etched fine lines across her face and silvered her once-dark hair to pure white, there remains something striking about her. Her hair is worn loose to her shoulders, framing a face that has spent decades witnessing both joy and heartbreak. Her gray eyes remain sharp and observant, missing very little. She walks with a carved ashwood staff banded in seven silver rings, one for each decade she has served the people of Emerald Grove. Though advancing age has slowed her pace somewhat, she still carries herself with quiet dignity and unwavering confidence. She favors simple robes in shades of cream, gray, and deep blue, allowing her actions rather than her clothing to command respect.
Personality: Evren is sternly affectionate, a woman whose love is expressed through honesty rather than comfort. She believes kindness without truth serves no one, and she has spent her life helping others understand the weight of their promises. Though many younger villagers find her intimidating at first, those who know her well recognize the deep compassion beneath her disciplined exterior. She listens carefully before speaking and chooses her words with deliberate precision. Rarely does she raise her voice. She has never needed to. Evren believes that promises shape lives, communities, and destinies. To her, a vow is not merely spoken words but a sacred commitment that becomes part of a person’s character.
Background: Born in Emerald Grove nearly eight decades ago, Evren devoted her life to the spiritual traditions of the village at a young age. Her natural sense of discipline and unwavering commitment to truth quickly distinguished her among her peers. Over the years, she became one of the most respected members of the Wise Ones, eventually assuming responsibility for the ceremonial bindings used during Promisings and other sacred rites. She maintains the Grove’s vow ledger, a carefully preserved record containing generations of promises, marriages, oaths, and sacred commitments. Many villagers view her as both historian and guardian, entrusted with preserving not only the words spoken during ceremonies but the meaning behind them.
Duties: As Keeper of Vows, Evren oversees the crafting and blessing of ceremonial bindings used during sacred rites. She records Promisings, marriages, oaths of service, and other significant commitments within the village ledger. She is often consulted when disputes arise involving agreements, contracts, or questions of honor, her reputation for fairness making her one of the most trusted voices in Emerald Grove.
Relationships: Evren serves alongside Miralin Dorrin and Naelle Venn as one of the Three Wise Ones. Though their personalities differ greatly, the three women share profound mutual respect built over decades of service. She holds particular affection for the younger generations of the village, though she often expresses it through guidance and correction rather than overt warmth. Many adults can recall receiving one of Evren’s stern lectures in their youth and later realizing she had been right.
Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Sister Evren Kael is regarded as the living embodiment of integrity. Villagers trust her judgment because they know she values truth above popularity and fairness above convenience. People may not always enjoy hearing what Evren has to say. They rarely doubt that she means it. Domain Reflection: Promises and Truth. Keeper of the law of spoken hearts. Common Saying: “Every word carries a shadow. Speak only those you mean to live beneath.”
Gabriella Brills
Role: Head Royal Seamstress of Alerion; Co-Owner of Brills & Vale Fine Attire
Age: 48
Appearance:
Gabriella Brills is a woman whose elegance seems effortless. Her rich chocolate-brown hair is usually pinned neatly away from her face while she works, though a few loose strands inevitably escape by the end of a busy day. Hazel eyes flecked with gold miss very little, whether a loose thread on a nobleman’s sleeve or a worry hidden behind a customer’s smile.
Though nearing fifty, Gabriella carries herself with remarkable grace. Her posture remains straight, her movements deliberate, and her appearance always impeccably maintained. She favors finely tailored dresses of her own design, often in deep greens, burgundies, and blues accented with subtle embroidery that showcases her craftsmanship without drawing unnecessary attention.
She possesses the quiet confidence of a woman who knows exactly how skilled she is and has nothing left to prove.
Personality:
Refined, disciplined, and endlessly patient, Gabriella commands respect without ever demanding it. She believes excellence is achieved through care rather than pressure and leads her workshop with calm authority.
She addresses everyone by name whenever possible, from royalty to apprentices, believing that respect should be freely given and freely returned.
Though warm and approachable, Gabriella’s standards are legendary. She notices every crooked seam, every uneven stitch, and every shortcut taken in haste. Her corrections are rarely harsh, but they are always remembered.
Years of working with nobles have taught her diplomacy. Years of running a successful business have taught her resilience. Together, those lessons have made her one of the most respected tradeswomen in Alerion.
Background:
Originally from the southern coast, Gabriella learned the art of tailoring as a young apprentice before eventually making her way north to Alerion. Through talent, determination, and countless hours of work, she built a reputation that eventually earned her the position of Head Royal Seamstress.
Today she oversees the wardrobes of the royal family while also co-owning Brills & Vale Fine Attire alongside her longtime partner and friend, Merra Vale.
Their shop has become renowned throughout the kingdom for exceptional craftsmanship, serving everyone from common laborers to members of the royal court. Gabriella insists that every garment deserves equal care, regardless of who wears it.
Relationships: Merra Vale – Business partner, closest friend, and frequent source of both inspiration and exasperation. Gabriella affectionately refers to her as “my wild needle.”
Queen Serenya Perwin – Longtime client and trusted confidante. Their relationship has grown beyond business into genuine friendship.
Eleonore Meswick – A woman Gabriella deeply respects. Their conversations often extend well beyond fabric and fashion, frequently continuing over tea long after fittings are complete.
Reputation:
Throughout Alerion, Gabriella Brills is known as the woman trusted to dress queens, princes, nobles, and honored guests of the crown. Her work is admired for its beauty, precision, and craftsmanship, and her name has become synonymous with excellence.
Among those who know her personally, however, she is remembered for something even more important: her kindness, professionalism, and unwavering belief that every person deserves to feel valued, no matter their station in life.

Role: Owner of the Underbrew Inn
Age: 48
Height: 6’3″
Appearance: Garrick Underbrew is a broad, sturdy man whose presence seems to warm a room before he has spoken a single word. Standing 6’3″ with a powerful frame built through decades of hauling barrels, carrying supplies, chopping wood, and tending the endless needs of the Underbrew Inn, he is one of the largest men in Emerald Grove. Despite his size, there is nothing intimidating about him. His round-bellied build, kind eyes, and easy smile make most people feel comfortable around him almost immediately. His dark brown hair is cropped short and beginning to silver at the temples, while years of laughter have etched warm lines around his expressive brown eyes. His face is often flushed slightly from long hours spent near tavern hearths, bustling kitchens, and good company, giving him the rosy-cheeked appearance many villagers associate with home. His voice is deep and gravel-warm, capable of turning even a scolding into something that sounds suspiciously like affection. More often than not, Garrick can be found with his sleeves rolled up and an apron tied around his waist, carrying trays, wiping tables, chopping firewood, or helping wherever he is needed. Though he owns the largest inn in Emerald Grove, he has never considered himself above the work that keeps it running.
Personality: Garrick is widely regarded as one of the kindest men in Emerald Grove. Patient, generous, and endlessly welcoming, he has built a reputation for treating strangers like friends and friends like family. He possesses a practical wisdom that comes not from books or titles, but from years spent listening to people and helping them through life’s challenges. Quick with a joke and slow to anger, Garrick believes most problems can be improved with a hot meal, a strong drink, and someone willing to listen. His humor is warm, earthy, and often self-deprecating, used less to draw attention to himself and more to put others at ease. Though naturally easygoing, he becomes fiercely protective when those he loves are threatened, revealing a stubborn determination that few are foolish enough to challenge. Above all else, Garrick values family, fairness, honest work, and community. He has little interest in status or recognition, measuring success instead by full tables, happy guests, repaired roofs, and neighbors who know they can rely on one another. While others chase wealth or influence, Garrick quietly builds something he considers far more important: a place where people feel they belong. His greatest strength is his unwavering optimism. His greatest fear is that kindness may not always be enough in a world capable of great cruelty. Even so, he chooses kindness every day.
Background: Alongside his wife, Alenya, Garrick spent years building the Underbrew Inn into the social heart of Emerald Grove. What began as a simple inn grew into one of the village’s most beloved gathering places, welcoming travelers, merchants, hunters, nobles, adventurers, and locals alike. While Alenya oversees the kitchens and keeps the inn fed, Garrick manages much of its daily operation, greeting guests, serving drinks, settling disputes, organizing supplies, and ensuring everyone who walks through the door feels welcome. Together they have built more than a successful business. They have created a second home for much of the village. A devoted husband and father, Garrick has spent much of his life raising his large family while teaching them the values that guide his own life: hard work, generosity, humility, and loyalty. Though many see him simply as an innkeeper, those closest to him understand that much of the stability and warmth found within Emerald Grove can be traced back to the example he sets every day. His marriage to Alenya remains one of the great love stories of the village. The two share a partnership built on trust, laughter, and quiet devotion, each making the other stronger. Despite decades together, Garrick still finds reasons to flirt with her whenever he can, much to the amusement of their children and the delight of nearly everyone who witnesses it.
Reputation: To the people of Emerald Grove, Garrick Underbrew is more than an innkeeper. He is a trusted friend, a dependable neighbor, and a source of steady guidance during difficult times. Many villagers seek his advice as readily as they seek his ale. Though he would never describe himself as a leader, others naturally look to him when problems arise. His combination of kindness, common sense, fairness, and unwavering decency has earned him the respect of nearly everyone who knows him. He listens before speaking, helps before being asked, and rarely expects anything in return. Children adore him, travelers remember him long after leaving, and locals often measure a person’s character by whether Garrick likes them. Many believe the Underbrew Inn would lose its soul without Garrick behind the bar. Others quietly suspect Emerald Grove itself would feel a little dimmer without him. To those who know him best, Garrick represents something increasingly rare: a genuinely good man who asks for nothing except the chance to help make life a little better for the people around him.

Role: Metalsmith, Jeweler, and Master Craftsman of the Foregate
Age: 40
Height: 6ft 3in
Appearance: Gareth Caelwyn is a tall, broad-shouldered man whose strength is immediately apparent. Years spent at the forge have built powerful arms, thick shoulders, and hands marked by calluses, heat, and hard-earned skill. His dark brown hair is kept cropped short and already shows streaks of silver at the temples, lending him an air of maturity beyond his years. Deep gray eyes, often compared to polished steel, are observant and thoughtful, rarely revealing more emotion than he intends. A neatly trimmed beard frames a strong jaw, and his clothing is typically practical, favoring durable work garments over fashion. Whether standing at a forge or seated at a family table, Gareth carries himself with quiet confidence and steady purpose.
Personality: Gareth is dependable, pragmatic, and fiercely loyal to those he loves. While others may be drawn first to his wife’s warmth and beauty, Gareth serves as the steady foundation beneath their family. He believes that skill is earned through patience, discipline, and repetition, lessons he applies to both craftsmanship and life. He is not a man of many words, but when he speaks, people listen. Gareth values honesty, reliability, and hard work above charm or status. Though often reserved around strangers, those who know him well discover a dry sense of humor and a deeply caring heart hidden beneath his practical exterior. He rarely rushes to judgment and prefers to observe before forming opinions. Once his trust is earned, however, his loyalty is unwavering.
Background: Born into a family of artisans, Gareth discovered his talent for metalwork at a young age. Apprenticed early, he quickly developed a reputation for precision and exceptional craftsmanship. Over the years, his work evolved beyond traditional smithing into the more delicate and demanding art of jewelry making and ornamental metalwork. His life changed when he met Maerina Caelwyn, whose extraordinary talent with glass complemented his own skill with precious metals. Together they built both a successful business and a loving family, combining their talents to create works sought after throughout the region. Gareth crafts the settings, frames, clasps, and intricate metal elements that transform Maerina’s glass creations into treasured heirlooms. Among the artisans of the Foregate, Gareth is regarded as a master of his craft and a man whose word is as reliable as the steel he shapes.
Relationships: Gareth shares a strong and loving partnership with his wife, Maerina. Their marriage is built upon mutual respect, trust, and a shared dedication to their work. While their personalities differ greatly, her warmth balances his practicality, and his steadiness grounds her creativity. As a father, Gareth has worked to instill patience, discipline, and attention to detail in his son, Aric. He recognizes Aric’s natural artistic gifts and encourages them, while also teaching him that talent alone is never enough without perseverance and hard work. Though proud of his son, Gareth rarely offers praise lightly, believing accomplishments should speak for themselves. As a result, the approval he does give carries tremendous weight.
Connection to Imoen Meswick: Gareth is initially cautious regarding Imoen’s growing interest in Aric. Protective of his son and naturally skeptical of youthful infatuation, he watches carefully before forming an opinion. Over time, however, he comes to admire Imoen’s intelligence, determination, and willingness to learn. Once convinced of her sincerity, Gareth becomes one of her strongest supporters, respecting her not for who she is connected to, but for the effort she puts into understanding both Aric and the craft that matters so much to him.
Reputation: Throughout the Foregate, Gareth Caelwyn is known as a craftsman of remarkable skill and a man whose integrity is beyond question. Customers trust his work, fellow artisans respect his expertise, and friends value his reliability. Some men build beautiful things. Gareth builds things meant to last.

Role: Head Royal Cook of Alerion Castle
Age: 53
Appearance: Hanelle Voss is a broad-shouldered woman with kind brown eyes and a braid of auburn hair streaked naturally with silver, usually pinned neatly beneath a linen kitchen cap. Years spent working over hot ovens and roaring hearths have left her cheeks perpetually rosy and her forearms strong from kneading dough, lifting cauldrons, and preparing meals for hundreds. She favors practical dresses beneath spotless aprons, though by the end of any busy day traces of flour, herbs, or spice can usually be found somewhere on her sleeves. There is something immediately comforting about her presence, the sort of warmth that makes people feel welcome the moment they enter her kitchen.
Personality: Warm, bustling, and endlessly practical, Hanelle runs the castle kitchens with the efficiency of a seasoned commander and the heart of a loving grandmother. She is quick to offer a meal, a piece of advice, or a gentle scolding, often delivering all three in the same conversation. Though her voice can carry across an entire kitchen when needed, it is rarely raised in anger. She believes most problems can be solved with patience, hard work, and a good meal. Beneath her cheerful demeanor lies a sharp and organized mind. Hanelle manages supplies, schedules, staff, and feasts with remarkable ease, rarely forgetting a detail. She remembers birthdays, favorite dishes, food allergies, and small preferences that others overlook, treating everyone from royalty to stable hands with the same care and attention.
Background: Born in the trade city of Halrien, Hanelle began her culinary career as an apprentice in the guild kitchens, learning the art of feeding large crowds efficiently without sacrificing quality. Her talent, leadership, and reputation eventually brought her to the attention of Queen Serenya, who personally invited her to join the castle staff nearly twenty years ago. Since then, Hanelle has transformed the royal kitchens into one of the most respected culinary operations in the kingdom. Though she rarely receives public recognition for her work, nearly everyone within the castle understands that many of its daily comforts depend upon her steady leadership. Over the years, she has come to view the royal family as her own extended family. She takes particular pride in ensuring every celebration, gathering, and holiday meal feels special, believing that food brings people together in ways few other things can. Relationships: Hanelle shares a close friendship with Queen Serenya and has spent enough years serving the royal family to know their habits almost as well as they do. She keeps a fond rivalry with the castle steward, frequently teasing that while he counts the kingdom’s coins, she counts its smiles. Her affection extends to nearly everyone under the castle’s roof, and many younger staff members quietly regard her as a second mother.
Reputation: Throughout Alerion Castle, Hanelle Voss is known as the woman who keeps everyone fed, organized, and cared for. Her kitchens run with remarkable precision, her meals are beloved throughout the realm, and her staff are fiercely loyal to her. Among those who know her best, however, she is remembered not for her cooking, but for her kindness. Hanelle has a gift for making people feel at home, whether they sit upon a throne or a kitchen stool. In a castle filled with nobles, soldiers, scholars, and servants, she is often the heart that keeps them all connected.

Role: Owner and Brewmaster of the Mandrake Tavern
Age: 45
Height: 5ft 10in
Appearance: Harold Mandrake is a broad, heavyset man whose presence fills a room almost as effectively as his laughter. Completely bald and proudly unconcerned by it, he possesses warm hazel eyes, a neatly kept beard, and a face that seems permanently caught between amusement and mild exasperation. Years spent hauling barrels, tending brewing vats, and managing a busy tavern have left him stronger than his comfortable frame might initially suggest. He favors practical clothing suited to work behind the bar and can most often be found with rolled sleeves, a stained apron, and the look of a man who has heard every story twice already.
Personality: Warm-hearted, welcoming, and endlessly patient, Harold has built a reputation as one of the friendliest men in Emerald Grove. He loves people, enjoys good conversation, and firmly believes most problems can be improved with a hot meal and a comfortable chair. Despite his easygoing nature, Harold is no fool. Years of listening to travelers, merchants, laborers, and villagers have given him a sharp understanding of people. He often sees trouble coming long before others do, though he usually responds with a resigned sigh rather than a lecture. Animals are his greatest weakness. Stray cats, injured dogs, lost birds, and half-wild creatures somehow always find their way to Harold, who inevitably insists he is “absolutely not keeping another one” before feeding them scraps and making room for them near the tavern hearth. Most of Emerald Grove suspects the animals know exactly what they’re doing.
Background: Harold inherited his family’s tavern and transformed it into one of the most beloved gathering places in Emerald Grove. In addition to running the establishment, he personally brews every ale, cider, mead, and spirit served beneath its roof. His drinks are known throughout the region for their quality, and travelers frequently make special stops simply to sample his latest creations. Together with his wife, Brigitte, Harold has created a tavern known not only for its food and drink but for its atmosphere. The Mandrake Tavern is a place where celebrations are held, friendships are forged, business is conducted, and visitors quickly become regulars.
Relationships: Harold’s greatest pride is not his tavern, his brewing, or even his reputation. It is his daughters. A devoted father, Harold adores all three of his girls and has never hidden it. While some men lament not having sons to carry on their name, Harold has always considered himself fortunate. He delights in spending time with his daughters, supporting their dreams, and watching them grow into strong, capable young women. Truthfully, Harold often jokes that the village already has more than enough boys to keep everyone busy. Between the thirteen Underbrew sons, their friends, and the endless adventures young men seem determined to find, Harold believes the gods balanced things out perfectly. He has never felt the absence of sons in his own home, only gratitude for the family he was given. His daughter Elise holds a special place in his heart, though he works hard not to play favorites. He has always encouraged her kindness, compassion, and optimism, qualities he admires deeply and sees reflected in the woman she is becoming. Like many fathers, Harold was initially cautious when Elise’s relationship with Braedan Meswick became serious. Over time, however, he came to respect Braedan’s character, work ethic, and devotion to his daughter. While he still enjoys reminding the young man that Elise will always be his little girl, there is genuine affection behind the teasing.
Reputation: Throughout Emerald Grove, Harold Mandrake is known as a man who makes people feel welcome. Whether serving a meal, offering advice, brewing ale, or feeding yet another stray animal, he approaches life with generosity and humor. Most people visit the Mandrake Tavern for the food or drink. Many return because Harold is there. Common Saying: “Sit down. Eat something. Problems always look smaller on a full stomach.”

Role: Prince of Alerion
Age: 2
Height: Still growing rapidly
Appearance: Jazlin Perwin is unmistakably his father’s son. Even at two years old, he already possesses the broad frame and sturdy build that suggest he will one day grow into a large man. His face is nearly a miniature reflection of Nathaniel Perwin’s, from the shape of his jaw to the expressions that cross his features. The one obvious difference is his hair. Where Nate inherited the golden hair of House Perwin, Jazlin received his mother’s vibrant red curls. Combined with Nate’s bright green eyes, the result is a striking child who rarely goes unnoticed. His cheeks are perpetually rosy from running, climbing, and exploring things he has absolutely no business touching.
Personality: Jazlin is curious, fearless, and endlessly energetic. The world is an enormous adventure waiting to be investigated, and he approaches nearly everything with enthusiasm. Unlike many children his age, he shows little fear of strangers. He greets new faces with wide-eyed curiosity and often assumes everyone he meets exists solely to play with him. His laughter comes easily, his tears disappear quickly, and his stubborn streak appears whenever someone tells him “no.” Though generally cheerful, Jazlin already displays the quiet determination common to the Perwin family. Once he decides something should be done, convincing him otherwise can prove surprisingly difficult.
Family: Jazlin is the beloved son of Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin and Crown Princess Evelaine Perwin. To Nate, he represents something once thought impossible: a future beyond grief. To Evelaine, he is the center of her world. His grandparents, King Lorian and Queen Serenya, spoil him shamelessly whenever given the opportunity, a fact both his parents pretend to discourage while secretly enjoying.
Relationships: Jazlin quickly develops a fondness for Imoen Meswick, whose playful nature and willingness to entertain his endless questions make her one of his favorite people. The two often leave adults wondering who is encouraging whom. More curious is his attachment to Elise. While still too young to explain it, Jazlin seems instinctively drawn to her calm presence and often seeks her out during gatherings. Whether sitting quietly beside her or insisting she read to him, he behaves differently around her than he does with most adults. Elise finds the behavior charming, if somewhat puzzling.
Reputation: At two years old, Jazlin’s reputation extends little beyond being one of the most adored children in the kingdom. Servants smile when they see him. Nobles soften around him. Guards frequently discover that protecting a curious prince is far more difficult than guarding a castle. Wherever Jazlin goes, laughter usually follows shortly behind.
Imoen Meswick

Role: Seamstress and Leatherworker
Age: 16½
Birthday: September 10
Appearance:
Imoen Meswick possesses the kind of beauty that turns heads without her ever seeming aware of it. She stands at 5’4″ with an athletic but slender build earned through years of helping on the family farm and working with leather and fabric. Long waves of strawberry-blonde hair fall well past her shoulders, framing bright green eyes that rarely stop studying the world around her.
Her hands are rarely idle. More often than not, she can be found carrying scraps of leather, measuring cords, unfinished projects, or a needle tucked somewhere into her clothing. She favors practical dresses suited to both work and movement, though she has a habit of adding small decorative touches that reveal her creativity.
When she smiles, which is often, she looks younger than her years. When she smirks, which is equally often, she looks far older.
Personality:
Curious to a fault, Imoen approaches life with an endless stream of questions and observations. Very little escapes her notice, and even less escapes her interest. She has an uncanny ability to find herself involved in situations she probably should have avoided simply because she wanted to know what would happen.
Sharp-witted and deeply sarcastic, she possesses a talent for delivering perfectly timed comments that leave others laughing, groaning, or both. While her humor often serves as a shield, those closest to her know it also comes from genuine affection.
Despite her playful nature, Imoen is far from frivolous. She is intelligent, capable, and fiercely loyal to the people she loves. Her curiosity drives her to learn constantly, whether that means mastering a new leatherworking technique, hearing stories from travelers, or questioning things most people simply accept.
She inherited much of her mother’s love of learning, though where Eleonore seeks answers through study, Imoen often prefers experience.
Background:
The youngest child of Thomas and Eleonore Meswick, Imoen grew up surrounded by stories, scholarship, and hard work. While her older brother Braedan often carried the weight of responsibility, Imoen enjoyed a little more freedom to explore her interests and pursue her own path.
Over the years she developed considerable skill as both a seamstress and leatherworker, producing everything from clothing repairs to custom leather goods. Her craftsmanship reflects both patience and creativity, allowing her to combine practicality with beauty in ways few others can.
Though she enjoys her work, Imoen’s true passion lies in discovering new things. Whether learning from merchants, listening to travelers’ tales, or asking questions most people wouldn’t think to ask, she approaches the world with an enthusiasm that makes every day feel like an adventure waiting to happen.
Relationships:
Imoen shares a close bond with her family, particularly her brother Braedan. Though she frequently teases him, often mercilessly, her admiration for him runs deep. She understands burdens he rarely speaks aloud and often uses humor to lighten moments when he grows too serious.
Her relationship with Eleonore reflects their shared curiosity and love of learning, while her connection to Thomas was built on affection, trust, and the confidence that he would always make time to listen. She was devestated by his death.
Reputation:
Among those who know her, Imoen is remembered for three things: her sharp tongue, her sharp mind, and her inability to leave a mystery alone.
Most people underestimate her at first.
Few make that mistake twice.
Whether repairing a torn saddle, crafting fine leatherwork, asking uncomfortable questions, or making an entire room laugh with a single remark, Imoen has a habit of leaving an impression wherever she goes.
She is clever, capable, endlessly curious, and entirely herself, qualities that make her both difficult to predict and impossible to forget.

Role: Co-Owner and Pitmaster of Fendale Roasts
Age: 47
Height: 6ft 2in
Appearance: Jonathan Fendale is a tall, broad-shouldered man whose presence feels as steady and dependable as a well-built hearth. Though softened slightly by years of good food and long days spent around roasting pits, there is unmistakable strength beneath his frame. His dark brown hair is worn short and touched with silver at the temples, while his full beard carries even more gray, especially along the jawline. Deep brown eyes sit beneath thoughtful brows, constantly observing the world around him. His hands are large and scarred in small, unremarkable ways, marked by decades of knives, fire, and honest work. Old burns and faint nicks tell the story of a man who has spent most of his life preparing food for others. His voice is warm and resonant, carrying easily even when he speaks quietly. Jonathan possesses the rare ability to fill a space without demanding attention. People naturally trust him, often before they realize why.
Personality: Jonathan is observant before he is outspoken. He prefers listening to talking, watching to judging, and understanding before acting. While friendly and approachable, he is not overly social, choosing his words carefully and rarely speaking simply to fill silence. He possesses a dry sense of humor that often catches people by surprise. Most of his funniest remarks are delivered quietly and without warning, leaving others unsure whether they should laugh until they see the faint smile hidden in his beard. Protective by nature, Jonathan cares deeply for his family but never smothers them. He believes people should be given room to grow, make mistakes, and become who they are meant to be. However, once someone he loves is threatened, his patience becomes remarkably difficult to move. Slow to anger and slow to forgive deliberate cruelty, Jonathan is the sort of man whose calm should never be mistaken for weakness.
Background: Jonathan built Fendale Roasts alongside his wife, Chloe, turning a simple food stall into one of the most beloved gathering places in the Foregate. While Chloe oversees vegetables, breads, sauces, and customers, Jonathan runs the fire itself. He understands heat the way sailors understand tides. Years of experience allow him to judge a roast by smell alone, test doneness with a touch, and coax extraordinary flavor from even the humblest ingredients. His meats are known throughout Emerald Grove for being rich without heaviness, expertly seasoned without overwhelming the food itself. Workers stop by for dependable meals. Merchants visit for consistency. Even nobles occasionally seek out the stall when they want honest food prepared exceptionally well.
The Stall: Fendale Roasts Fendale Roasts has become more than a business. It is a meeting place. News travels through the stall as quickly as meals. Engagements are quietly discussed over shared bread. Travelers exchange stories beside workers ending long shifts. Children are often given extra portions when Chloe suspects they have not eaten enough, and no one leaves hungry if Jonathan can help it. The stall is affordable enough for laborers and respected enough for visiting nobles, a balance few establishments ever achieve. At midday, there is almost always a line. Most consider it worth the wait.
Relationships: Jonathan shares a remarkably strong partnership with his wife, Chloe. Their marriage is built on mutual respect, trust, and years of working side by side. Neither seeks to lead the other. Decisions are made together, responsibilities shared naturally, and disagreements handled privately. Together they raised their daughter, Liora, with expectations of honesty, kindness, and hard work. Jonathan takes enormous pride in the woman she has become, though he rarely says so directly. When Andrien Underbrew begins spending more time around Liora, Jonathan notices immediately. In truth, both he and Chloe notice long before Andrien realizes he is being observed. Neither is particularly impressed by titles, wealth, or reputation. What matters to Jonathan is character. Effort. Intention. By the time Jonathan eventually pulls Andrien aside for a conversation, Chloe already knows exactly what it will be about. And she already knows how Jonathan feels.
Reputation: Throughout the Foregate, Jonathan is known as a man whose word can be trusted and whose food never disappoints. Fellow merchants respect him, customers seek him out, and neighbors know they can rely on him when help is needed. People come to Fendale Roasts for the food. Many return because Jonathan and Chloe make it feel like they belong there. Common Saying: “Good food doesn’t need tricks. If the fire’s right, the rest takes care of itself.”

Role: Captain of the Eastern Watch; Royal Guard Liaison to the Meswick Household
Age: 37
Height: 6ft 2in
Marital Status: Married to Merra Vale
Appearance: Joren Vale is a broad-shouldered man whose bearing immediately identifies him as a soldier long before his uniform does. Years of military service have left him physically imposing without excess, his strength built through discipline rather than vanity. Dark hair, touched by early silver at the temples, is kept neatly trimmed in accordance with military standards. His steel-blue eyes are sharp and observant, constantly assessing the world around him with quiet attention. Whether dressed in polished armor or simpler clothing away from duty, Joren carries himself with the same precise posture and calm confidence. He rarely appears disheveled, viewing preparation and discipline as forms of respect both for himself and those around him.
Personality: Joren is a man of steady convictions and few wasted words. Quietly intelligent and deeply observant, he prefers listening to speaking and action to promises. While many officers command through force of personality, Joren earns loyalty through consistency, fairness, and example. His sense of duty runs deep, but it is not blind. He believes loyalty means protecting what is right, not merely obeying orders. This balance between obedience and conscience has earned him the trust of both the crown and those who serve beneath him. Though reserved with strangers, Joren possesses a dry sense of humor that surfaces unexpectedly among friends and family. Beneath his disciplined exterior lies a genuinely compassionate man who cares deeply about the people entrusted to his protection.
Background: Born to a family of modest means within Alerion, Joren entered military service at a young age and quickly distinguished himself through discipline, sound judgment, and exceptional skill in the field. During the Border Conflicts, he earned multiple commendations for bravery, leadership, and restraint under pressure, developing a reputation as an officer who could be trusted to make difficult decisions when lives were at stake. His success eventually led to promotion as Captain of the Eastern Watch, where he became responsible not only for security but for mentoring and shaping the next generation of guards. Rather than ruling through intimidation, Joren built a culture of professionalism, accountability, and mutual respect. His integrity and discretion eventually drew the attention of both King Lorian and Crown Prince Nathaniel Perwin, who came to rely upon his judgment in matters requiring trust and confidentiality.
Skills & Expertise: Joren is an accomplished swordsman, experienced field commander, and capable tactician. Trained in the silent movement techniques favored by Alerion’s scouts, he is equally comfortable leading troops in formation or operating discreetly when circumstances demand it. His greatest strength, however, is his ability to remain calm under pressure. Where others react, Joren evaluates. Where others panic, Joren plans. This steadiness has saved lives more than once.
Relationships: Joren shares a strong and loving marriage with Merra Vale, a royal seamstress whose warmth and creativity balance his structured nature perfectly. Though their duties often keep them apart, their relationship remains grounded in mutual respect, trust, and genuine affection. Friends often joke that Joren represents steel while Merra represents silk, yet together they form a partnership stronger than either could alone. He carries a small piece of emerald silk embroidered by Merra within his travel satchel, a private reminder of home that rarely leaves his side. As liaison and bodyguard to the Meswick family, Joren develops a deep respect for those under his protection. While his duty requires professionalism, he gradually comes to view the family as more than an assignment. Their safety becomes personal. He is particularly valued by Braedan, who quickly learns that beneath Joren’s reserved demeanor lies wisdom earned through experience rather than rank.
Role in the Story: As unrest begins to spread throughout Alerion, Joren serves as both protector and observer. His position within the Royal Guard grants him insight into shifting loyalties, growing tensions, and the morale of those sworn to defend the kingdom. While politicians debate and nobles maneuver, Joren remains focused on what matters most: protecting innocent lives and preserving the values he has dedicated his life to serving. His quiet reliability provides a stabilizing presence amid increasing uncertainty, offering a grounded perspective as larger events begin to unfold.
Reputation: Throughout Alerion, Joren Vale is regarded as one of the most respected officers in the Royal Guard. His honesty is unquestioned, his loyalty proven, and his judgment trusted by both superiors and subordinates alike. Many soldiers inspire obedience. Joren inspires trust.

Role: Older Sister of Rhaessa and Misha Price
Age: 15 (at the time of her death)
Appearance: Joy Price was a bright and energetic young woman with expressive features and an easy smile. Though only fifteen, she carried herself with a confidence and maturity that often made her seem older than her years. Her presence brought warmth and activity to the Price household, and she possessed the kind of lively spirit that naturally drew others toward her.
Personality: Protective, spirited, and fiercely loyal to those she loved, Joy possessed a strong sense of responsibility despite her youth. She was quick to defend her family, especially her younger siblings, and rarely hesitated when someone needed help. Though capable of stubbornness, her heart was always in the right place. Background: Born to Xavier and Marlene Price, Joy was the eldest of three children and took her role as an older sister seriously. She grew up in a close-knit household alongside Rhaessa and Misha, often looking after them and serving as both protector and confidant. She was equally devoted to her younger brother, Misha, and deeply loved her parents, Xavier and Marlene. Family was the center of Joy’s world, and she never hesitated to put their needs before her own.
Reputation: Those who knew Joy remembered her as courageous, kindhearted, and fiercely devoted to the people she loved. Role: Young Son of Garrick and Alenya Underbrew
Age: 14 Months
Height: 2ft 2in
Appearance: Kaius Underbrew is a sturdy, curly-haired toddler with warm hazel eyes and an expressive face that rarely hides what he is thinking. His soft brown curls have already developed a mind of their own, often sticking out in every direction no matter how much his family tries to tame them. Though still small, he carries the healthy build common among the Underbrew children and is rarely seen without food crumbs somewhere on his clothing. Unlike most children his age, Kaius has not yet shown much interest in walking. Perfectly content to be carried by parents, siblings, or whichever unfortunate family member happens to be standing closest, he sees little reason to abandon a system that works so well.
Personality: Kaius is cheerful when happy, affectionate when comfortable, and spectacularly cranky when either condition is unmet. He possesses a stubborn streak already large enough to concern his older brothers. If he decides he wants something, he is remarkably persistent about expressing that fact. Fortunately, what he wants is usually simple. Most often, he wants a wooden spoon. For reasons no one fully understands, Kaius has developed a deep attachment to wooden cooking spoons. Whenever one is left unattended in the kitchen, it inevitably disappears, later discovered clutched triumphantly in his hands. The family has long since accepted that several spoons effectively belong to him now. Though still very young, Kaius displays the same curiosity common to many of the Underbrew children. He watches everything with wide eyes, quietly observing the chaos of his enormous family from whichever lap, shoulder, or hip currently serves as his preferred seat.
Background: Born into the sprawling Underbrew family, Kaius entered a household already overflowing with older brothers, noise, laughter, and constant activity. As the youngest child currently living at home, he enjoys the unique privilege of being adored by nearly everyone around him. Between his parents, brothers, extended family, and regular visitors to the inn, Kaius rarely lacks attention. Whether this is helping or hindering his development remains a matter of debate.
Relationships: Kaius is doted upon relentlessly by his family, particularly by his older brothers, who often compete for the privilege of carrying him around. He has quickly learned how to use his considerable charm to secure extra attention, treats, and opportunities to avoid walking. Garrick and Alenya adore him, though both privately suspect he understands far more than he lets on.
Reputation: At fourteen months old, Kaius’s reputation extends primarily to being the smallest member of the Underbrew household and the undisputed owner of every missing wooden spoon in Emerald Grove. Many visitors arrive expecting to meet one of the famous Underbrew boys. Quite a few leave having been ordered around by the smallest one
Keo Underbrew
One of the three Triplets born to the Underbrew family. Owain, Arthur and Keo. There were complications and they came early. Keo did not survive.
Kerrin Dovak
Role: Miner, Expedition Member
Age: 25
Appearance:
Kerrin Dovak is a broad-shouldered young man whose easy smile and striking features often draw attention long before he speaks. Standing six feet 5 inches tall and weighing roughly two hundred pounds, he possesses the powerful build of a man accustomed to hard labor rather than deliberate training. Years spent working outdoors have left his fair skin tanned and weathered by sun and wind, while thick dark hair falls in a perpetually unruly mess that resists even his best efforts to tame it.
A short, well-kept black beard frames a strong jaw and handsome face, while sharp gray eyes, often bright with amusement, reveal a quick wit and warm disposition. Beneath his sleeves and collar lies an extensive collection of tattoos, each carrying personal meaning, memories, or stories gathered throughout his travels. Though undeniably attractive, Kerrin wears his appearance with little vanity, far more interested in conversation and companionship than attention.
Personality:
Warm, outgoing, and quick to laugh, Kerrin possesses a natural charisma that makes people comfortable almost immediately. He has a talent for finding humor even in difficult situations and often serves as a source of levity during long days of work. Though friendly and approachable, he is no fool. Kerrin is observant, intelligent, and capable of reading people surprisingly well.
Beneath his easygoing nature lies a strong sense of responsibility. He believes in earning his way through honest work and takes pride in carrying his share of any burden. While he enjoys adventure and travel, his greatest ambition is surprisingly simple: to build a comfortable life, find someone worthy of sharing it with, and create a home filled with laughter and stability.
Background:
Born into a working family, Kerrin learned early that nothing worth having comes easily. Rather than settle immediately into a single trade, he spent much of his early adulthood taking work wherever opportunity presented itself. Mining expeditions, trade caravans, and seasonal labor allowed him to see parts of Alerion few commoners ever experience while slowly building the savings he hopes will one day allow him to purchase land, build a home, and support a family of his own.
By the time he joins the Ruby Mines expedition, Kerrin has developed a reputation as a dependable worker and capable traveling companion. Though not formally educated, his experiences have given him a broad understanding of people and places that often surprises those who mistake his easygoing nature for simplicity.
Relationships:
Kerrin forms a fast friendship with many members of the Ruby Mines expedition, particularly Toren Silver, whose steady practicality balances Kerrin’s more social nature. Over time he develops genuine respect for Braedan Meswick, admiring both his leadership and willingness to work alongside the men under his command.
Though he enjoys meeting new people and rarely struggles to make friends, Kerrin remains unmarried and focused on building a future for himself through honest work. He hopes that one day his efforts will allow him to establish a home, start a family, and create the kind of life he has always envisioned.
Reputation:
Among fellow laborers and travelers, Kerrin is known as the sort of man people enjoy having nearby. He works hard, complains little, and somehow manages to make even difficult days more enjoyable through humor and conversation. While his striking appearance is often noticed first, those who know him best remember something else entirely: his loyalty, kindness, and unwavering belief that life is meant to be lived fully.
Many see Kerrin as a man destined for something greater than the mines, though Kerrin himself would laugh at the suggestion. In his mind, happiness has never required greatness. Only good work, good friends, and someone worth coming home to.
Role: Apothecary Witch and Herbalist
Age: 20
Appearance: Liora Venn is a striking young woman with long, red hair that falls in loose waves around her shoulders and sea-green eyes that seem to catch the light in unexpected ways. A faint scattering of freckles dusts her cheeks and nose, giving her an approachable warmth that puts others at ease. She favors simple dresses in shades of green, blue, and cream, often marked by traces of herbs, flower dust, or dried leaves gathered during her work. Small glass vials hang from her belt, softly clinking as she moves. Wherever she goes, she carries the faint scent of mint, lavender, and sun-dried herbs.
Personality: Warm, intuitive, and quietly confident, Liora possesses a calming presence that makes people feel comfortable around her almost immediately. She speaks her mind when necessary but rarely raises her voice, preferring patience and understanding over confrontation. Though gentle by nature, she is far from naïve. Liora is observant, quick-witted, and possesses a quiet intelligence that often surprises those who mistake kindness for softness. She believes deeply in helping others and finds joy in small acts of care that many people overlook. She has a habit of humming old folk melodies while she works, and those who know her well often joke that the herbs seem to grow better when she sings to them.
Background: Raised in the Foregate, Liora developed a fascination with plants, remedies, and the subtler forms of magic from a young age. Over time she became known as a talented herbalist and apothecary, blending practical healing knowledge with the quiet enchantments that still linger within the world. Her small market stall is filled with jars of dried herbs, powders, oils, teas, and tinctures, attracting everyone from merchants and laborers to travelers passing through the village. Many visit seeking remedies, while others simply stop to enjoy her company and conversation. Liora’s family is also well known throughout the Foregate. Her parents operate Fendale Roast, a popular double stall in the market where they roast meats, vegetables, and seasonal fare for locals and travelers alike. Situated only a short distance from Liora’s apothecary stall, the family businesses often complement one another, with the comforting scents of roasted food mingling with the aromas of herbs, teas, and flowers that surround her workspace. Growing up surrounded by both community and commerce helped shape Liora’s belief that caring for people is just as important as healing them. Her craft focuses on the everyday magic that often goes unnoticed, proving that even in a world where great wonders are fading, smaller ones still remain.
Abilities & Craft: Liora practices tea magic, a subtle blend of herbalism, intuition, and enchantment. Her teas are known for bringing comfort, easing pain, calming troubled minds, and helping people find moments of peace during difficult times. She also creates salves, oils, powders, and remedies that respond faintly to the world’s lingering magic. While her abilities may lack the spectacle of grand spellcraft, they embody something equally important: healing, restoration, and care.
Relationships: Liora shares a growing affection for Andrien Underbrew. Where Andrien is practical, steady, and grounded, Liora is intuitive, compassionate, and quietly hopeful. Together they balance one another, each bringing strengths the other sometimes lacks. Though neither is quick to rush matters of the heart, there is a natural ease between them that becomes increasingly difficult for either of them to ignore.
Reputation: Among the people of the Foregate, Liora is known as a gifted healer, a trusted friend, and one of the kindest souls in the market. People seek her remedies for their ailments, but many return simply because they feel better after spending time in her presence. Most know her as the young woman with the red hair and the herbal stall. Those who know her well understand she is much more than that. Liora has a rare gift for reminding people that even the smallest kindness can make the world feel a little brighter. Core Belief: “Every leaf listens. Every cup remembers. Magic isn’t gone, it just needs someone to speak softly enough for it to answer.”
Lorian Perwin

Role: King of Alerion
Age: 70
Appearance: King Lorian Perwin is a tall, broad-shouldered man whose presence fills a room without ever demanding attention. Though age has touched him with silver, he remains remarkably strong, carrying the muscular build of a man who spent much of his life riding, training, and leading from the front. His thick blond hair, now streaked generously with silver, falls in loose curls that frame a weathered but handsome face. A neatly kept beard of gold and silver highlights a jaw that has softened little with age.
His warm green eyes, shared by his son Nathaniel, are perhaps his most recognizable feature. They are eyes that seem to find the good in people before the faults, often accompanied by a smile that deepens the lines at their corners. His cheeks are frequently rosy from laughter, good food, or time spent outdoors, and there is a warmth to his expression that puts even nervous visitors at ease.
Though he wears the finest clothing in the kingdom when duty requires it, Lorian is most comfortable in practical royal attire, favoring comfort and function over excessive displays of wealth.
Personality: Kind, patient, and deeply compassionate, Lorian has spent his life striving to be the sort of king his people deserve. He believes that leadership begins with listening and that a ruler’s greatest responsibility is caring for those who depend upon him. He is known for remembering names, asking after families, and treating both nobles and commoners with genuine respect.
Lorian possesses a quiet wisdom earned through decades of rule, though he is the first to admit that he no longer understands every challenge facing the kingdom as clearly as he once did. As the years have passed, he has increasingly relied upon Nathaniel’s judgment and energy, recognizing that the future belongs to the next generation.
Despite the burdens of the crown, he retains an infectious sense of humor and a hearty laugh. He enjoys family gatherings far more than court functions and often prefers simple conversations to political maneuvering.
Background: Lorian has ruled Alerion for decades, guiding the kingdom through seasons of prosperity, hardship, and change. Throughout his reign he earned a reputation as a fair and honorable king, one who placed the wellbeing of his people above personal ambition.
In recent years, however, age has begun to shift the balance of responsibility within the royal family. While Lorian continues to hold court, oversee matters of state, and fulfill the ceremonial duties of the crown, he has gradually entrusted more day-to-day leadership to Crown Prince Nathaniel. The arrangement allows Nate to gain invaluable experience while allowing Lorian the opportunity to step back from some of the kingdom’s heavier burdens.
Far from resenting the transition, Lorian welcomes it. He takes great pride in watching his son grow into the leader he always hoped he would become.
Relationships: Lorian shares a loving and enduring marriage with Queen Serenya, whose counsel and companionship have remained among the greatest blessings of his life. Together they raised Nathaniel and helped shape the values that define him.
He is immensely proud of Nate, viewing him not only as his heir but as a man who has exceeded every expectation placed upon him. He also adores his grandson, Jaz, whose presence brings renewed energy and joy to the royal household.
Beyond his immediate family, Lorian forms genuine connections with many of those around him. He develops a particular affection for the Meswick family, whose loyalty, resilience, and character remind him of the values he has always sought to protect within Alerion.
Reputation: Throughout the kingdom, King Lorian Perwin is remembered not simply as a ruler, but as a good man who happened to wear a crown. His reign is marked by fairness, stability, and an unwavering commitment to the people of Alerion.
While some see an aging king gradually passing responsibilities to his heir, those closest to him see something else: a father preparing the next generation to succeed while continuing to lead with grace, humility, and wisdom.
Among nobles and commoners alike, Lorian is beloved not because he sits upon the throne, but because he never forgot the people beneath it.

Her ash-dark hair is usually braided or tied back out of necessity, with loose strands often escaping after long days on the road. Sharp gray eyes miss very little, constantly observing the world around her with a healer’s trained attention. Lean and athletic from years spent crossing difficult terrain, she carries herself with the confidence of someone accustomed to hardship. When others panic, Maereth focuses. When others retreat, she endures. Her greatest strength is not her knowledge, but her determination to continue helping others regardless of the obstacles placed before her.
Background: Maereth earned a reputation as one of the most talented healers of her generation at an unusually young age. Rather than remaining in a single village or city, she chose a life of travel, bringing her skills to remote settlements, dangerous roads, and regions many healers would never willingly enter. Years spent working in difficult conditions taught her to rely on skill, observation, and adaptability. While she respects traditional healing methods, she is known for questioning outdated practices and developing new techniques when circumstances demand it. Many older healers initially viewed her methods with skepticism. Most eventually came to respect the results.
Specialties: Maereth specializes in trauma care, emergency medicine, wilderness survival, and long-distance patient transport. She is particularly skilled at treating severe injuries in environments where resources are limited and conditions are far from ideal. Her ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances has made her one of the most sought-after healers operating beyond the safety of established settlements.

She is known as someone who can be trusted to tell the truth, perform her duties with excellence, and remain steadfast when others lose hope.
Reputation: Among her peers, Maereth is regarded as exceptionally talented and far ahead of her years. Her knowledge, resourcefulness, and willingness to challenge conventional thinking have made her both respected and occasionally controversial within healing circles. Many believe she represents the future of her profession, combining traditional wisdom with a practical mindset that allows her to succeed where others might fail.
Legacy: Though still young, Maereth has already established herself as one of the most promising healers of her generation. Her dedication to innovation, adaptability, and patient care continues to influence those who work alongside her, ensuring her impact will be felt long after her travels have ended.

Though not physically imposing, she possessed a quiet presence that made others feel at ease in her company. Legacy:
Many of the qualities that define Rhaessa today can be traced back to Marlene. Her compassion, loyalty, and capacity to care for others were lessons first learned from her mother. Though years and tragedy separate them, Marlene’s influence remains woven throughout the person Rhaessa became.

Many people are surprised to learn her true age, as her youthful appearance and vibrant demeanor often make her seem years younger than she is. Standing at approximately five feet seven inches tall, Melinda carries herself with natural confidence and quiet elegance. Her warm smile and welcoming presence leave a lasting impression on nearly everyone she meets.

Her adventurous spirit and willingness to embrace new places and cultures make her a welcome companion wherever she travels.
Background: Originally descended from a family rooted in a much warmer region of the kingdom, Melinda never fully developed a fondness for harsh winters. As a result, she and her husband Denil often spent the coldest months visiting relatives in warmer climates whenever circumstances allowed. Over the years, Melinda became known as someone who could feel at home almost anywhere. Whether among family, friends, or complete strangers, she possessed a rare ability to form meaningful connections with those around her.
Relationships: Melinda is the beloved wife of Denil Royce. The two shared a close and enduring partnership built upon mutual affection, trust, and companionship. More often than not, her hands bear traces of chalk, thread, or whatever project currently occupies her attention.

Fortunately, she possesses enough charm and humor to make even her bluntest observations difficult to resent. She approaches both her craft and her relationships with enthusiasm, bringing warmth and laughter wherever she goes. Though known for her sarcasm and perfectly timed quips, Merra genuinely cares for the people around her. She is fiercely protective of her clients and takes personal pride in ensuring that everyone who leaves her workshop feels confident and comfortable. She has a particular fondness for the Meswick women, whom she affectionately considers “her girls,” and frequently balances encouragement with playful teasing. Role: Matron of the Grove; Elder of the Wise Women; Voice of the Moon
Age: 83
Appearance:
Miralin Dorrin is a tall and striking woman whose presence commands attention despite her advanced age. Her silver-white hair is worn in intricate braids wrapped into a crown atop her head, emphasizing both her dignity and station. Pale eyes, nearly the color of frost, miss very little, and many find it difficult to determine whether she is observing them or seeing something far beyond the present moment.
Faint luminescent lines trace her temples, glowing softly beneath certain moonlit skies. According to Grove tradition, these markings appear only on those who have dreamt directly beneath the full light of Lunara herself. Whether blessing or mystery, they have become one of Miralin’s most recognizable features.
Personality:
Serene, patient, and remarkably perceptive, Miralin possesses the quiet confidence of someone who no longer feels the need to prove her wisdom. She speaks sparingly, choosing her words with care, and has a habit of allowing silence to linger just long enough for others to discover their own answers.
Though gentle in manner, she remains sharp-minded and difficult to deceive. Beneath her calm exterior lies a keen intellect, a dry sense of humor, and a deep understanding of human nature cultivated through decades of guiding others through life’s most significant moments.
Miralin believes that every life is part of a larger pattern and approaches both joy and grief with equal reverence. To her, beginnings and endings are not opposites but companions, each giving meaning to the other.
Background:
For many decades, Miralin has served as Matron of the Grove and one of the most respected spiritual leaders in Alerion. She presides over ceremonies honoring Lunara, including births, blessings, vow ceremonies, and funerary rites, helping countless individuals navigate the transitions that define a lifetime.
As the eldest of the Wise Women, she often serves as their voice during important gatherings and sacred ceremonies. Her knowledge of tradition, history, and faith is unmatched, and many seek her counsel during moments of uncertainty.
Relationships:
Miralin shares a close bond with her fellow Wise Women, Evren Kael and Naelle Venn, forming a respected trio that guides many of the Grove’s sacred traditions.
She is deeply respected by the royal family, the people of Alerion, and those who seek wisdom within the Grove. While she offers guidance freely, she rarely gives direct answers, preferring to help others find their own path forward.
Reputation:
Throughout Alerion, Miralin is regarded as a living symbol of Lunara’s teachings. Her wisdom, compassion, and unwavering devotion to the cycles of life have earned her immense respect among nobles and commoners alike.
Many who meet her leave with the feeling that she understood them far better than they understood themselves.
Those who know her best often repeat one of her most famous teachings:
“The moon sees all things come round again.”

Role: Younger Brother of Joy and Rhaessa Price
Age: 7 (at the time of the attack) • 15 (if living)
Appearance: Misha Price was a bright-eyed young boy with an endless curiosity about the world around him. Small for his age but rarely lacking confidence, he possessed the boundless energy common to children who had not yet learned to fear what might happen tomorrow. Whether exploring, asking questions, or following his older sisters wherever they went, Misha rarely stayed still for long.
Personality: Curious, adventurous, and deeply affectionate, Misha approached life with the enthusiasm only a child can possess. He admired his older sisters and often tried to keep up with them despite the difference in age. Though young, he possessed a stubborn determination that occasionally got him into trouble and a loyalty that made him impossible to leave behind for long. Misha saw the best in people and tended to trust easily, believing most problems could be solved if someone was willing to help. His optimism and good nature made him a source of joy within the Price household.
Background: Born to Xavier and Marlene Price, Misha was the youngest of the Price children. Growing up several years younger than his sisters, he spent much of his childhood looking up to Joy and Rhaessa, eager to be included in whatever adventures they found themselves pursuing. His life changed dramatically during the attack that destroyed the Price family home. Unlike Joy and his parents, Misha’s fate was never confirmed. In the years that followed, no one could say with certainty whether he survived, escaped, or perished that night.
Relationships: Misha shared a close bond with both of his sisters. He adored Joy and often relied upon her guidance, while Rhaessa’s memories suggest a deep affection and protectiveness toward her younger brother. He was equally loved by his parents, Xavier and Marlene, who worked hard to provide a stable home for their children. Though years have passed, Misha remains one of the greatest unanswered questions in Rhaessa’s life. She never learned whether he survived the attack or what became of him afterward.
Reputation: Those who knew Misha remember a cheerful and energetic child who rarely stayed quiet for long. Though young, he possessed a good heart and a fearless curiosity that often led him toward adventure. Today, Misha Price remains a mystery. To some he is presumed lost. To others, he represents hope that not every member of the Price family was taken that night. Until the truth is known, his story remains unfinished.
Role: Wise Woman of the Grove; Dreamwatcher of Lunara
Age: 74
Appearance:
Naelle Venn is a graceful woman with fine silver hair cropped short for practicality and bright green eyes that seem to catch and reflect light like a river at sunrise. Though age has softened her features, there remains a quiet vitality about her that makes her appear perpetually awake to things others overlook. She is most often found in simple robes suited to Grove life, carrying the faint scent of lavender, beeswax, and candle smoke wherever she goes.
Many describe Naelle’s presence as comforting, though some find it difficult to explain exactly why. There is a calmness around her that seems to settle anxious hearts without a word being spoken.
Personality:
Kind, gentle, and endlessly patient, Naelle possesses a warmth that naturally draws others toward her. She is beloved by children, trusted by the elderly, and welcomed by nearly everyone who crosses her path. Her compassion never feels forced, and she has an extraordinary gift for making people feel seen and understood.
Yet there is something undeniably uncanny about her as well. Naelle occasionally responds to questions before they are asked, answers concerns that have not yet been spoken aloud, or offers comfort for fears others have not revealed. Whether this comes from wisdom, intuition, or something more mysterious, few can say.
Unlike many spiritual leaders, Naelle rarely speaks in riddles. Her guidance is usually simple, direct, and delivered with gentle certainty. She believes deeply that dreams carry meaning and that even the most troubled soul deserves kindness.
Background:
For many years, Naelle has served the Grove as its Dreamwatcher, interpreting dreams, guiding those troubled by visions, and offering comfort to those nearing the end of their lives. Her work often places her at the boundary between waking and sleeping, life and death, certainty and mystery.
Naelle believes dreams are one of the ways Lunara remains connected to her followers. She teaches that the goddess remembers her children through dreams and occasionally offers guidance through symbols, emotions, and glimpses that only become clear with time.
Her stewardship of the Grove’s candle chambers has become one of her most recognized duties. She tends the candles lit for the departed and those nearing passage, maintaining traditions that have endured for generations.
Relationships:
Naelle serves alongside Miralin Dorrin and Evren Kael as one of the Grove’s three Wise Women. Though the three fulfill different roles, they share a deep bond forged through decades of service and friendship.
Many families throughout Alerion seek Naelle’s counsel during periods of grief, uncertainty, or significant life changes. Her reputation for compassion has made her one of the most beloved spiritual figures in the kingdom.
Reputation:
Throughout Alerion, Naelle is known as a woman who brings comfort wherever she goes. Those who meet her often leave feeling lighter than when they arrived, even if they cannot explain why.
Many swear she somehow knows what people need before they do. Whether through wisdom, intuition, or Lunara’s guidance, Naelle possesses a rare ability to ease fear and help others find peace during life’s most difficult moments.
One of her most cherished teachings is often repeated throughout the Grove:
“Even endings are only the moon turning her face.”

Role: Student
Age: 12
Appearance: Naeve Mandrake is a cheerful young girl with long blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and delicate, doll-like features that often draw attention wherever she goes. Small for her age and standing at just over five feet tall, she possesses a youthful charm that makes it difficult for anyone to stay annoyed with her for long. Her expressions are wonderfully transparent, revealing excitement, curiosity, mischief, or disappointment long before she says a word. Though her coloring differs from that of her older sister Elise, the family resemblance becomes obvious whenever she smiles.
Personality: Energetic, curious, and endlessly optimistic, Naeve approaches life with enthusiasm that borders on unstoppable. She has a habit of asking questions faster than most people can answer them and often finds herself involved in adventures she never intended to start. While occasionally impulsive, she possesses a genuinely kind heart and an eagerness to help that wins over most people she meets. Naeve is quick to laugh, quick to forgive, and quick to become excited about nearly anything involving food, celebrations, animals, or stories. She dreams openly about the future and sees possibilities where others see obstacles. Though still young, she already demonstrates a determination that suggests she will be difficult to discourage once she sets her mind to something.
Background: Born into the Mandrake family, Naeve spends her days studying, helping where she can, and imagining the life she hopes to build someday. While many children dream of adventure, heroics, or grand accomplishments, Naeve’s ambitions are much simpler. She hopes to work in a bakery when she grows older. The smell of fresh bread, the warmth of the ovens, and the joy baked goods bring to others have fascinated her for as long as she can remember. Few topics can hold her attention longer than discussions about pastries, cakes, or the possibility of sampling fresh bread straight from the oven.
Relationships: Naeve is the younger sister of Elise Mandrake and looks up to her tremendously. Though the age difference occasionally leaves her feeling left out of more grown-up conversations, she remains fiercely proud of her sister and eager to follow in her footsteps whenever possible. She shares a close bond with her family and is known for attaching herself to visitors, neighbors, and anyone willing to listen to her latest idea, question, or story.
Reputation: Most people who know Naeve describe her as sweet, enthusiastic, and impossible to discourage for long. Her excitement has a way of spreading to those around her, and her optimism often brightens even difficult days. Though still young, many suspect she will someday achieve whatever goal she sets for herself, largely because she has never seriously considered the possibility that she might fail.

Role: Crown Prince of Alerion
Age: 43
Appearance: Nathaniel Perwin is a striking man whose presence commands attention long before he speaks. Standing tall and broad-shouldered, he possesses the powerful build of someone who has spent a lifetime training with sword and horse despite the comforts of royalty. His long golden-blond hair falls past his shoulders, framing a handsome face marked by strong features, warm green eyes, and an easy smile that rarely seems forced. Many throughout Alerion consider him the most handsome man in the kingdom, though Nate himself appears entirely unaware of the reputation. His fair skin, noble bearing, and effortless confidence make him difficult to ignore, yet it is the warmth in his expression that people remember most. He carries himself with the grace and elegance expected of a future king, but never with arrogance.
Personality: Kindhearted, loyal, and deeply compassionate, Nate believes leadership is measured by service rather than authority. He treats nobles and commoners alike with respect, earning genuine loyalty rather than demanding it. Though capable of commanding armies and navigating court politics, he is equally comfortable sharing a meal with farmers, craftsmen, or soldiers. Nate possesses a natural charisma that puts others at ease. He smiles often, laughs freely, and has a habit of making people feel heard regardless of their station. Beneath that warmth lies a steadfast determination and quiet strength. Once he commits himself to a cause or a person, his loyalty rarely wavers. While many rulers lead through fear or power, Nate leads through trust, consistency, and example.
Background: Born heir to the throne of Alerion, Nate has spent his entire life preparing for the responsibilities that await him. From an early age he was trained in governance, diplomacy, military leadership, and the traditions of the kingdom. Yet despite his royal upbringing, he never lost touch with the people he would one day rule. Rather than isolating himself within castle walls, Nate frequently traveled throughout the kingdom, learning firsthand how farmers, merchants, craftsmen, and laborers lived. Those experiences shaped the man he became, instilling a belief that a ruler’s first responsibility is to the people who depend upon them. His closest friendship was forged with Thomas Meswick, a bond that endured throughout adulthood and became one of the most important relationships of his life. The friendship profoundly shaped Nate’s view of leadership, family, and loyalty.
Relationships: Nate shares a loving marriage with Adriana Perwin and is a devoted father to their son, Jaz. His family remains at the center of his world despite the demands of royal life. His friendship with Thomas Meswick led him to become deeply connected to the Meswick family as a whole. He holds great affection and respect for Eleonore, Braedan, and Imoen, viewing them as far more than subjects of the crown. He maintains a close relationship with his parents, King Lorian and Queen Serenya, both of whom helped shape the values he carries into adulthood.
Reputation: Throughout Alerion, Prince Nathaniel Perwin is admired as much for his character as his station. He is respected by nobles, beloved by commoners, and trusted by those who know him personally. Many see him as the ideal future king: honorable without being rigid, strong without being cruel, and powerful without forgetting the people he serves. Among those closest to him, however, Nate is remembered for something simpler. His unwavering loyalty. When Nate Perwin gives his word, people know they can build their lives upon it.

Role: Blacksmith
Age: 18
Appearance: Owain Underbrew is an imposing young man whose size alone tends to make a lasting first impression. Standing 6’4″ tall, he possesses the broad shoulders, powerful build, and immense strength expected of a blacksmith, though his physique is surprisingly balanced beneath the muscle. Years spent at the forge have given him thick arms, calloused hands, and a naturally powerful frame, while a narrower waist keeps him from appearing bulky. He has sandy-brown hair that falls to the middle of his back, usually tied loosely with a leather cord to keep it out of his face while working. Warm brown eyes and a calm expression soften an appearance that many initially find intimidating.
Personality: Quiet, dependable, and remarkably patient, Owain is often one of the steadier presences within the sprawling Underbrew family. He rarely feels the need to be the loudest voice in a room and prefers action over unnecessary conversation. While some mistake his reserved nature for shyness, those who know him understand that he simply values listening more than speaking. Owain approaches both people and craftsmanship with care. He believes anything worth doing is worth doing properly, whether forging a blade, repairing a tool, or helping a younger sibling with a problem. Beneath his calm exterior lies a deep well of loyalty and determination that surfaces whenever someone he cares about is threatened. Though physically imposing, he possesses a gentle nature that often surprises those meeting him for the first time.
Background: Owain is one of a set of triplets born prematurely to Garrick and Alenya Underbrew. Of the three children, he was the only one to survive infancy. Though he was born early and smaller than expected, he proved to be the strongest of the three from the very beginning, a fact his family has never forgotten. Growing up within the bustling environment of the Underbrew Inn taught him the value of hard work, but it was the forge that ultimately captured his attention. Over time he apprenticed as a blacksmith and developed both the strength and skill necessary to master the trade. Today, he has established himself as a talented craftsman whose work is respected for its quality and reliability.
Specialties: Owain specializes in forging blades, tools, and horseshoes. While capable of producing nearly any item required by the village, he takes particular pride in creating practical pieces designed to withstand years of hard use. His philosophy is simple: a good tool should never fail the person depending on it.
Relationships: As a member of the Underbrew family, Owain maintains strong bonds with his parents, siblings, and extended household. Though less outspoken than many of his relatives, his loyalty runs deep, and he is often one of the first people family members turn to when they need help. He shares a close relationship with his brothers and has earned a reputation among younger siblings as someone who can always be relied upon for advice, assistance, or quiet support.
Reputation: Throughout the Foregate, Owain is known as a skilled blacksmith, a dependable worker, and a man whose word can be trusted. His craftsmanship has earned the respect of fellow tradesmen, while his character has earned the respect of nearly everyone else. Many people find him intimidating until they speak with him. Most quickly discover that beneath the muscles, forge soot, and quiet demeanor is one of the gentlest members of the Underbrew family.

From a young age she helped wherever she was needed, whether carrying flour, serving customers, or assisting with baking. Role: Companion of Braedan Meswick
Age: 20
Appearance: Rhaessa Price is a young woman with long dark brown hair, warm brown eyes, and delicate features that often cause others to underestimate her. Though twenty years old, she appears noticeably younger than her age, a fact that frequently surprises those who learn it. Her thoughtful expressions and quiet confidence reveal a maturity that contrasts with her youthful appearance. Though physically unassuming at first glance, she carries herself with an awareness and self-possession that quickly make it clear there is far more beneath the surface than appearances suggest.
Personality: Intelligent, perceptive, and remarkably resilient, Rhaessa possesses a sharp analytical mind and a tendency to notice details others overlook. She approaches problems from unusual angles, often identifying solutions long before those around her realize there is a problem at all. While naturally compassionate, Rhaessa is also practical, direct, and rarely afraid to speak her mind. She has little patience for unnecessary cruelty, dishonesty, or wasted effort, preferring actions over empty promises. Beneath her calm exterior lies a sharp sense of humor, a healthy amount of sarcasm, and a talent for delivering observations that are often equal parts insightful and exasperating. Her wit frequently catches people off guard, particularly when they mistake her quiet nature for timidity. Despite the hardships she has endured, Rhaessa remains deeply loyal to the people she cares about. Once she trusts someone, she becomes fiercely protective of them and rarely abandons those she considers family.
Background: Born to Xavier and Marlene Price, Rhaessa grew up alongside her older sister Joy and younger brother Misha. Though much of her life remains shrouded in unanswered questions and fragmented memories, she spends much of her journey seeking to understand her past and the person she was before fate altered the course of her life. Over time, Rhaessa becomes one of Braedan Meswick’s closest companions, accompanying him through some of the most difficult challenges he faces. Her insight, determination, and unique perspective prove invaluable as the mysteries surrounding the kingdom continue to unfold.
Relationships: Rhaessa forms a close friendship with Braedan Meswick, built on trust, honesty, and mutual respect. She values loyalty above nearly everything else and gradually develops strong bonds with those who prove themselves worthy of that trust. She remains deeply connected to the memory of her family, particularly her sister Joy and her younger brother Misha, whose fate remains unknown.

Role: Youngest son of Garrick and Alenya Underbrew
Age: 14 weeks old
Appearance: A healthy, round-cheeked infant with sandy-brown hair beginning to grow in and bright brown eyes that seem far too alert for his age. Though still small enough to spend most of his days in someone’s arms, he already shows signs of the sturdy Underbrew build that runs throughout the family.
Personality: Too young for a fully formed personality, but already known for being curious and unusually observant. Robert spends much of his time watching the constant activity around the Underbrew Inn with wide-eyed fascination. He is generally content and easygoing, though he possesses a remarkably powerful cry when he decides he has been ignored for too long.
Background: Born shortly before the events of Chains, Robert is the youngest of Garrick and Alenya Underbrew’s many children. Surrounded by older siblings, cousins, inn guests, and a seemingly endless stream of activity, he has never lacked for attention.
Family Reputation: Within the Underbrew household, Robert is affectionately treated as everyone’s baby. Few people can walk past him without stopping to smile, make faces, or attempt to steal a moment holding him before being chased off by another family member waiting their turn.

Role: Student and Aspiring Artist
Age: 14
Appearance: Standing 5’3″, she possesses a lean build that is often hidden beneath layers of practical clothing. Her strawberry-blonde hair is usually tied back in a loose braid or ponytail to keep it out of her face while working on one project or another. Bright blue eyes are constantly moving, observing details others miss and quietly storing them away for future sketches. Though naturally pretty, she pays little attention to her appearance. More often than not, she can be found wearing sturdy boots, loose tunics, and well-worn breeches despite the raised eyebrows such choices sometimes earn. Dresses are tolerated only under the most extreme circumstances, and even then usually with loud complaints.
Personality: Independent, creative, and stubborn beyond reason, she has never been particularly interested in behaving the way others expect. While many girls her age dream of fine gowns and courtship, she is far more likely to be found covered in charcoal dust, paint, or wood shavings while working on a new project. She possesses a quick wit and a mischievous sense of humor, often using both to deflect attention away from herself. Though outspoken when challenged, she is deeply loyal to the people she loves and fiercely protective of her family. Beneath her rebellious exterior is a thoughtful and observant young woman who notices beauty in places others overlook. She sees the world differently than most people and has an artist’s habit of finding inspiration in ordinary things.
Background: The middle of the three Mandrake sisters, she has spent much of her life balancing between Elise’s steady responsibility and Naeve’s youthful enthusiasm. While both of her sisters fit more comfortably within traditional expectations, she quickly discovered that she did not. Growing up in the Emerald Grove, she developed a love of creating things with her hands. Whether sketching village life, carving small figures from wood, painting, or crafting whatever caught her imagination, she was happiest when working on a new project. Rather than developing an interest in dresses, embroidery, or courtship, she became fascinated by drawing, carving, painting, and creating anything her imagination could conceive. Her notebooks, scraps of parchment, and pockets are often filled with sketches, ideas, and half-finished projects. Though her family occasionally wishes she would behave a little more conventionally, they have long since accepted that she is happiest when allowed to follow her own path.
Specialties: Drawing, painting, carving, crafting, and visual design. She possesses a remarkable artistic eye and an ability to capture details others often miss, whether in people, landscapes, animals, architecture, or everyday life. Dreams and Ambitions: Unlike her sisters, whose futures seem easier for others to imagine, she has always known exactly what she wants. She intends to become an artist and make a living creating beautiful things. Whether through paintings, carvings, illustrations, or crafts, she dreams of sharing the images she carries in her imagination with the rest of the world.
Relationships: She shares a close bond with both of her sisters, though she often expresses affection through teasing rather than sentiment. Elise occasionally wishes she would wear something more appropriate, while Naeve finds her endlessly fascinating. Though she complains whenever forced into formal clothing, she loves her family deeply and would do almost anything for them.
Reputation: Within the Emerald Grove, she is known as the Mandrake girl who refuses to wear dresses and always seems to be carrying a sketchbook, carving knife, or some strange new project. Most people find her unconventional. Those who know her best simply call her determined. Whether sketching neighbors, carving small figures from scraps of wood, or covering spare parchment with new ideas, she has become a familiar sight throughout the village. Many suspect she will become a talented artist one day. She fully intends to prove them right.

His hands were rough and calloused from decades of honest labor, yet those who knew him best often remarked that he handled newborn lambs and frightened children with equal gentleness. Role: Royal Griffin Master and Head Trainer of the Royal Griffins
Age: 57
Appearance: Thalen Orwyck is a tall, broad-shouldered man whose years spent beneath open skies have left their mark upon him. His once-dark hair has long since turned silver and is typically worn tied back at the nape of his neck. Sun-browned skin, weathered features, and faint claw scars speak to decades spent working alongside creatures capable of both incredible loyalty and tremendous danger. His steel-gray eyes are sharp and observant, assessing people and griffins alike with the same quiet scrutiny. Practical leathers reinforced at the shoulders and chest serve as his preferred attire, carrying the familiar scents of hay, leather, oil, and the open air.
Personality: Thalen is a man of quiet authority whose presence commands respect without demanding it. He speaks sparingly, but every word carries purpose. Though often perceived as stern or intimidating by those who first meet him, he possesses a patient and thoughtful nature that makes him an exceptional teacher. He believes trust must be earned, whether between griffin and rider or master and student. While he has little patience for arrogance, he shows remarkable kindness toward those willing to learn. Beneath his gruff exterior lies a deeply compassionate man who understands that confidence is built through guidance, not fear.
Background: Born in the mountain settlement of Rynnor Vale, Thalen began his life working as a falconer’s apprentice before discovering a talent for handling far larger creatures. His skill eventually earned him a position caring for Alerion’s royal griffins at the age of twenty, where he quickly distinguished himself as one of the kingdom’s most gifted trainers. His bond with his first griffin, Ashael, became the subject of countless stories after the pair helped defend Alerion’s southern border during the War of Embers. Though many years have passed since Ashael’s death, Thalen still carries a feather from her wing braided into a leather cord around his wrist. Fifteen years ago, he was appointed Royal Griffin Master and has since overseen the kingdom’s griffin program, training both riders and griffins alike.
Specialties: Griffin training, rider education, aerial tactics, behavioral observation, and bond development. Thalen is widely regarded as the foremost authority on griffins in Alerion. His understanding of their behavior, instincts, and emotional bonds is unmatched, allowing him to work with creatures many others would consider impossible to handle.
Notable Traits: Despite carrying a slight limp from an old riding injury, Thalen refuses any accommodation for it and rarely acknowledges the injury at all. He maintains extensive journals documenting griffin bloodlines, temperaments, behaviors, and rider pairings. Many consider his records the most comprehensive collection of griffin knowledge in the kingdom. He possesses an uncanny ability to calm even the most temperamental griffins, a skill many believe borders on magical, though Thalen insists it comes from patience, observation, and respect.
Relationships: Respected throughout Alerion’s military and royal households, Thalen is regarded as both a mentor and authority figure by generations of griffin riders. Though he keeps most people at arm’s length, those who earn his trust find a steadfast ally and loyal friend. He develops a particularly important mentorship with Elise, guiding her not only in the practical aspects of griffin handling but in understanding the deeper responsibilities that come with a bond such as hers with Calivar.
Reputation: Throughout Alerion, Thalen is considered one of the kingdom’s greatest living griffin masters. Riders seek his guidance, nobles value his counsel, and even the griffins themselves seem to recognize his presence. Many believe there is no one better suited to teach the next generation of riders.
Legacy: For decades, Thalen has dedicated his life to strengthening the bond between griffins and those chosen to ride them. His teachings, records, and influence have shaped the modern griffin program, ensuring that both riders and griffins are understood, respected, and protected. Standing six feet five inches tall and weighing nearly three hundred pounds, he possesses the kind of natural strength most men spend a lifetime trying to build. Broad shoulders, powerful arms, and a chest seemingly carved from oak make him one of the largest men many people will ever encounter. Despite his imposing stature, there is little aggression in his appearance. Sandy blond hair falls to his collar in loose waves, often tousled by wind and work alike. Years spent outdoors have left his skin naturally tanned, while warm chocolate-brown eyes observe the world with steady patience and quiet thoughtfulness. Beneath his rugged exterior lies a genuinely kind heart. Toren is fiercely loyal to those he considers friends and possesses a quiet protectiveness that rarely draws attention to itself. He is the sort of man who notices when someone is struggling and helps without being asked, expecting neither recognition nor praise in return.
Background: Raised in a hardworking family, Toren learned early that discipline and persistence accomplish far more than talent alone. Years of labor strengthened both his body and his character, teaching him the value of consistency, patience, and responsibility. Rather than chasing glory or recognition, he has always preferred honest work and the satisfaction that comes from earning his place through effort. By the time he joins the Ruby Mines expedition, Toren has already developed a reputation as a dependable worker and trustworthy companion. Though still young, his maturity, work ethic, and calm judgment often make him seem older than his nineteen years.
Relationships: Toren develops a strong friendship with Kerrin Dovak during the expedition, the two balancing one another despite their very different personalities. Where Kerrin is outgoing and quick to make friends, Toren is quieter and more reserved, often content to observe rather than participate. Together, they form a reliable partnership built on mutual respect and trust. Over time, Toren also comes to admire Braedan Meswick’s leadership. He respects Braedan’s willingness to work alongside the men under his command and recognizes the weight of responsibility the young foreman carries throughout the expedition.
Reputation: Among fellow laborers and travelers, Toren is known as a man who can always be counted upon. If a task needs doing, he does it. If someone needs help, he helps. His steady nature, tireless work ethic, and quiet competence have earned him the trust of nearly everyone who works beside him. While many remember his remarkable size, those who know him best remember something far more important: his reliability. Toren Silver is the kind of man who keeps his word, stands by his friends, and remains steady when others falter. In a world full of uncertainty, he is often the person others trust to stand firm when it matters most.

Role: Sailor
Age: 19 (at time of death)
Appearance: William Ruane was a handsome young man with dark brown hair, warm hazel eyes, and an easy smile that made others feel welcome in his presence. Broad-shouldered and strong from years of physical work, he carried himself with youthful confidence and an adventurous spirit. As Antony Ruane’s only son, he shared many of his father’s features, though William’s expression often held a youthful optimism that had not yet been tempered by hardship.
Personality: Kind-hearted, curious, and eager to experience the wider world, William possessed a restless spirit that often carried him beyond the familiar comforts of home. He loved stories of distant lands and dreamed of seeing them for himself one day. Though adventurous by nature, he remained deeply devoted to his family. He was protective of his younger sisters, respectful toward his parents, and quick to offer help wherever it was needed. His easy laugh and genuine warmth made him well-liked by nearly everyone who knew him.
Background: The eldest child of Antony and his wife, William grew up as the only son among three children. From a young age, he dreamed of life beyond Alerion’s borders and longed to see the places sailors described in their stories. As he entered adulthood, he took the first steps toward that dream by joining a merchant vessel. His family watched him leave with equal parts pride and worry, knowing his future lay beyond the horizon. Tragically, that future was cut short when the ship carrying him was lost at sea. William died at the age of nineteen, two years before the events of Chains.
Relationships: William shared a close bond with his family and was especially protective of his younger sisters. Though his time with them was brief, the memories he left behind continue to shape the lives of those who loved him. His death became one of the defining sorrows of Antony Ruane’s life, leaving an absence that could never truly be filled.
Reputation: Those who knew William remember him as a good-hearted young man with an adventurous spirit and a promising future. Though his life was short, he left behind a reputation for kindness, loyalty, and determination.
Legacy: William’s greatest legacy is not what he accomplished, but what he meant to those who loved him. His loss serves as a constant reminder of how quickly life can change and how deeply a single person can impact the lives of others. Though two years have passed since his death, he remains a cherished memory within the Ruane family, remembered not for the tragedy that claimed him, but for the bright future he never had the chance to live.

Role: Child
Age: 2½
Appearance: Wrynn Underbrew is a cherubic little boy with soft blonde hair, bright blue eyes, and round cheeks that seem permanently made for smiling. Though still small for his age, there is already something unmistakably Underbrew about him. His sturdy build, expressive face, and endless curiosity ensure he is rarely overlooked for long. His hair often falls into his eyes, usually because he has managed to escape whatever attempt was made to tidy it. More often than not, his clothing bears evidence of his latest adventure, whether that involves dirt, grass stains, animal fur, or all three at once.
Personality: Sweet-natured, affectionate, and endlessly curious, Wrynn approaches the world with wide-eyed wonder. Though slower than many children his age to reach certain milestones, he never seems bothered by moving at his own pace. He speaks very little, often communicating through gestures, expressions, and determined persistence instead. Despite his quiet nature, his emotions are never difficult to understand. If he is happy, everyone knows. If he is upset, everyone knows that too. Wrynn is particularly drawn to animals and seems to possess an instinctive comfort around them. Creatures that might shy away from others often tolerate his presence with surprising patience.
Background: One of the younger members of the ever-growing Underbrew family, Wrynn has spent his entire life surrounded by siblings, cousins, inn guests, and constant activity. Though this might overwhelm some children, he appears perfectly content within the chaos. While he was slower than many children to crawl, walk, and speak, he has steadily continued to develop at his own pace. His family long ago learned that Wrynn does things when Wrynn decides he is ready.
Special Interests: Animals hold a special place in Wrynn’s heart. Dogs, cats, horses, griffins, livestock, woodland creatures—if it has fur, feathers, scales, or hooves, Wrynn wants to be near it. He can often be found quietly observing animals for long stretches of time, completely fascinated by even the simplest behaviors.
Relationships: Though loved by his entire family, Wrynn shares an especially strong attachment to his older brother Andrien. Whenever given a choice, he will almost always choose Andrien’s arms over anyone else’s. It has become something of a family joke that Andrien rarely enters a room without eventually leaving it carrying Wrynn. Whether seeking comfort, attention, or simply a better view of the world, Wrynn seems convinced that his older brother is exactly where he belongs. Despite Andrien’s occasional protests, no one expects this arrangement to change anytime soon.
Reputation: Within the Underbrew household, Wrynn is known for his gentle nature, his love of animals, and his unwavering determination to be carried by Andrien whenever possible. Most family members have stopped trying to compete.
Legacy: Though still very young, Wrynn already serves as a reminder that children grow in their own time and in their own way. Surrounded by a family that loves him exactly as he is, he continues to explore the world with curiosity, patience, and wonder. For now, that is more than enough.

Role: Day laborer and Father of Joy, Rhaessa, and Misha Price
Age: 40 (at the time of his death)
Appearance: Xavier Price was a broad-shouldered day laborer with dark brown hair, warm brown eyes, and a weathered face shaped by years of physically demanding work. Strong from long days of labor rather than training, he carried himself with the easy confidence of a man accustomed to hard work and harder living. Though his clothes were often worn and his appearance sometimes rough around the edges, there remained a natural charm about him that made it easy to understand why people enjoyed his company.
Personality: Xavier was a complicated man whose strengths and weaknesses often existed side by side. Friendly, charismatic, and quick with a laugh, he possessed a warmth that drew people toward him. He loved his family deeply and genuinely wanted the best for them, but wanting and doing were not always the same thing. Though capable of great kindness, Xavier struggled with responsibility and often turned to drink when life became difficult. He had a habit of chasing temporary comforts rather than confronting long-term problems, a flaw that frequently created hardship for those around him. His family knew both the best and worst parts of him, the man who could fill a room with laughter and the man whose choices often left others carrying burdens he should have shared.
Background: Born into a modest life, Xavier worked as a day laborer, taking whatever jobs he could find to help support his family. The work was physically demanding and often inconsistent, with good weeks followed by lean ones. While he genuinely wanted to provide a better life for his wife and children, he struggled to manage both responsibility and personal hardship. His tendency to spend money on drink often left the family in a more difficult position than it might otherwise have been, placing additional strain on Marlene as she worked to keep the household together. Despite his shortcomings, Xavier remained an important part of his children’s lives, creating both cherished memories and lasting frustrations in equal measure.
Relationships: Xavier was the husband of Marlene Price and the father of Joy, Rhaessa, and Misha. Though far from a perfect husband or father, he loved his family and was loved by them in return. His relationship with Marlene was often tested by the consequences of his drinking and financial irresponsibility, yet they remained committed to raising their children together. To Joy, he was a father whose flaws became increasingly visible as she grew older. To Rhaessa, he was both a source of happy childhood memories and difficult lessons. To Misha, he was simply Dad.
Reputation: Those who knew Xavier generally remembered him as a friendly and approachable man with a loud laugh, a generous spirit, and a tendency to make poor decisions. Some remembered his kindness first. Others remembered the opportunities he squandered and the burdens his choices placed on his family. Like many ordinary people, Xavier was neither wholly good nor wholly bad. He was a flawed man who loved his family, struggled with his demons, and too often fell short of the person he wanted to be.
Legacy: Xavier’s greatest impact on his children came not through wealth, status, or accomplishment, but through the lessons his life provided. His memory remains a reminder that love and good intentions matter, but that they must be supported by responsibility and action if they are to truly endure.
