Where It Is: Alerion is the kingdom where the events of The Fading Light Saga take place. It spans fertile farmland, thriving towns, ancient forests, and mountain ranges that conceal both opportunity and danger.
Significance: Alerion serves as the heart of the series. While the kingdom appears prosperous and stable on the surface, hidden corruption, political intrigue, and the gradual weakening of magic threaten its future. Nearly every major storyline in Chains begins within its borders.
Relevant Characters & Events: Home to the Meswick family, the Underbrew family, King Lorian Perwin, Queen Serenya, Prince Nathaniel Perwin, and many of the saga’s central figures. The kingdom serves as the backdrop for the Bloodlight Mine expedition, the discovery of the draining operation, and the first signs that magic itself is beginning to fail.

Where It Is: Emerald Grove is a thriving town located within Alerion, surrounded by fertile farmland, forests, and rolling countryside. It serves as a center for farming, trade, craftsmanship, and community life.
Significance: Emerald Grove represents tradition, family, and community throughout Chains. Many characters maintain deep ties to the town, making it one of the most important cultural and social centers in the kingdom.
Relevant Characters & Events: Home to the Meswick family, the Underbrew family, the Mandrake family, and many of Alerion’s farmers, craftsmen, and merchants. Numerous celebrations, family gatherings, and community events take place here throughout the story.

- Windmill
Where It Is: Located on the outskirts of Emerald Grove, the windmill stands atop a gentle rise where it can catch the strongest winds from the surrounding countryside.
Significance: The windmill plays an important role in the daily life of Emerald Grove, helping support the town’s agricultural needs. Its elevated position also offers sweeping views of the surrounding farmland and forests.
Relevant Characters & Events: The windmill serves as a recognizable landmark within Emerald Grove and appears throughout the story as part of the town’s landscape and daily life. Braedan works for Antony Ruane here at the windmill. - Hunting Grounds

Where It Is: Located within Emerald Grove, the seamstress shop provides clothing, alterations, repairs, and custom garments for the town’s residents.

Relevant Characters & Events: Imoen Meswick worked here before relocating to Alerion. The shop remains a familiar part of daily life within Emerald Grove and serves many of the town’s families and businesses.- Lake

Where It Is: Located on the outskirts of Emerald Grove, the Meswick Home sits at the center of the family farm, surrounded by fields, pastures, and open countryside.
Significance: The Meswick Home serves as the starting point of Chains and is the place where the Meswick family lived before relocating to Alerion. Many of the story’s earliest moments and memories are tied to the farm and the life the family built there.Relevant Characters & Events: Former home of Thomas, Eleonore, Braedan, and Imoen Meswick. The farm serves as the backdrop for several important early events and remains a place of personal significance throughout the story.
- Windmill
The Foregate
Where It Is: Located between the inner and outer walls of Castle Alerion, the Foregate is a sprawling district that serves as both a residential and commercial center. Its streets are filled with homes, shops, workshops, inns, markets, and gathering places that support daily life within the kingdom’s capital.
Significance: The Foregate is one of the busiest and most rapidly developing areas in Alerion. It serves as a bridge between the castle and the wider kingdom, bringing together nobles, merchants, craftsmen, laborers, and travelers. Many characters build new homes, businesses, and futures within its walls throughout Chains.
Relevant Characters & Events: Home to Liora Fendale, Sabine Corwin, Carys Dellan, Rowan Tameric, Eamon Tameric, and many of the families, merchants, and craftsmen introduced throughout the series. The construction of Andrien’s inn, new homes, and expanding businesses makes the Foregate a central hub of activity and growth.
The Alerion Castle - Also known as Perwin Castle
Significance: Castle Alerion serves as the political and social heart of the kingdom. Many of the story’s most important decisions, celebrations, and gatherings take place within its walls, making it one of the central locations in Chains.
Relevant Characters & Events: Home to King Lorian Perwin, Queen Serenya, Prince Nathaniel Perwin, Princess Adriana, and their family. The castle also serves as the workplace and residence of many trusted members of the royal household, including Aelric Montarras, Gabriella Brills, Thalen Orwyck, Joren Vale, Corren Darnel, Brennar Robbins, and Hanelle Voss. Throughout Chains, the castle hosts significant meetings, celebrations, ceremonies, and events that shape the future of the kingdom.
Kingdom of Dravenfell
Significance: Though little is revealed about Dravenfell in Chains, it is one of the major kingdoms of the region and will play a larger role as the series continues.
Relevant Characters & Events: Ruled by King Evander Alistair. Dravenfell is referenced throughout Chains as a neighboring kingdom beyond Alerion’s eastern border and is the homeland of Maereth Crowe, who served as a healer within the kingdom prior to her arrival in Alerion.
Ruby Mines - The Bloodlight Mines
Significance: The Bloodlight Mine serves as one of the primary settings of Chains. What begins as a mining expedition gradually uncovers hidden dangers, long-buried secrets, and discoveries that have far-reaching consequences for both the characters and the kingdom.
Relevant Characters & Events: Braedan Meswick spends much of Chains within the mine investigating his father’s murder and uncovering the truth behind the operation. Colsin Franks, Daren Hoyt, Kerrin Dovak, Toren Silver, Korrin, Barnaby, Bea, and the imprisoned dwarves are all closely connected to events that take place within its tunnels.
